‘Bade bade log bhi yahan…’: PM Modi mocks Rahul Gandhi’s fish pond dive from Begusarai at Bihar rally

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday appeared to take a veiled jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent fishing video from Begusarai. Speaking at a rally in Sitamarhi, PM Modi said that while Bihar’s fishery sector has made great progress under the NDA government, “some people have now started diving into ponds in the state.” His comment made the crowd burst into laughter, clearly aimed at Rahul Gandhi’s viral fishing clip.

(Bade bade log bhi yahan ki macchli dekhne aa rahe hain. Paani mein dubki laga rahe hain… Bihar ke election mein doobne ki practice kar rahe hain…) “The fish in Bihar are attracting big people too,” PM Modi joked. “They are diving into ponds — maybe practising how to sink in Bihar’s elections,” he added, continuing his taunt.

The remark came just days after Rahul Gandhi made news for stopping by a pond in Bharra village of Begusarai after an election rally. He joined local fishermen in catching fish, surprising many. Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar and VIP party chief Mukesh Sahani were with him.

Rahul Gandhi travelled about three kilometres to the pond, boarded a small boat to talk to fishermen, and then jumped into the water along with Kanhaiya. Villagers cheered as he helped pull in nets. Even his SPG security guards had to step into the pond to ensure his safety.

During the Sitamarhi rally, PM Modi also said he is a “brand ambassador of Bihar’s art and culture.” He shared that he recently gifted a Madhubani painting to Argentina’s Vice President as a mark of respect for Bihar’s rich tradition. “Those who insult our culture and traditions should be punished through votes,” he told the audience.

PM Modi attacks RJD-led opposition

PM Modi said that people in Bihar were rejecting the RJD-led opposition because they feared that if the INDIA bloc came to power, it would rule by fear and force. He claimed that people were worried the new regime would “put a katta (a country-made gun) to their heads.”

Speaking at a rally, PM Modi criticised the RJD, saying he was disturbed to hear that the party’s campaign involved children saying they wanted to grow up to be “rangdaar” (local strongmen). “Bihar does not want a government that brings katta (guns), kushasan (bad governance), kroorta (cruelty), and corruption,” he said.

Modi added that wherever he went in Bihar, people told him they did not want a katta sarkar but an NDA sarkar again. “The people don’t want a government that points guns at them and tells them to raise their hands. They don’t want ‘hands up’, they want ‘start-up’, and that’s what the NDA will support,” he said.

He further added that the NDA believes in giving youth school bags, computers, cricket bats, and hockey sticks, not guns and fear.
