Bangladesh’s former PM Khaleda Zia hospitalised, condition reported to be ‘extremely critical’

New Delhi: Ahead of Bangladesh’s elections, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s health has deteriorated, and she is reportedly in a critical condition, according to a close aide of the former Prime Minister. 80-year-old Khaleda Zia was admitted to a hospital on Sunday night, November 23. She has reportedly suffered a chest infection, affecting both her heart and lungs.

Special prayers are being offered for her

Bangladesh’s state-run news agency BSS quoted BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as saying that special prayers are being offered for her. Alamgir said, “Last night, doctors said her condition is extremely critical.” He further said, “After Friday prayers, we have asked people across the country to pray for Begum Khaleda Zia’s recovery. We pray that she recovers and returns to the people and gets the opportunity to work for the country.”

Has been suffering from several health problems

According to some reports, Khaleda Zia has been admitted to the CCU of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after doctors detected infections in her lungs and heart.

According to reports, Zia, the wife of President Ziaur Rahman, has been suffering from several health problems, including liver and kidney problems, diabetes, arthritis, and eye ailments. Her only son and acting BNP chairman, Tarique Rahman, has been living in London since 2008. Her second son, Arafat Rahman, died of cardiac arrest in 2025.

Following the violent protests in August last year and the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, the BNP has emerged strongly. In Bangladesh’s changed political environment, the BNP is focusing its efforts on winning elections and regaining power.
