Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin is all set to visit India(BHARAT) next month in December. As per Roscongress, Putin will arrive in New Delhi on December 5 and participate in the plenary session of the Russia-India(BHARAT) Forum. To recall, the Kremlin had earlier stated that Putin would visit India(BHARAT) in December, however, the exact date of his trip was not confirmed back then. During Putin’s visit to Delhi, discussions are expected to focus primarily on defense cooperation, including talks on the purchase of the S-400 air defense system and Su-57 fighter jets.

It is important to note that Putin’s visit for the India(BHARAT)-Russia annual summit will be his first trip to India(BHARAT) since December 2021. It will also mark his first visit to the subcontinent since Russia’s war with Ukraine began. Therefore, this visit is being considered significant for India(BHARAT)-Russia relations.

Notably, Putin’s visit to New Delhi comes at a time when relations between India(BHARAT) and the United States are tense. The US has been pressuring India(BHARAT) to stop buying Russian oil.

Putin and Modi had a phone conversation

In October, Vladimir Putin spoke with PM Narendra Modi over the phone. During the conversation, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between Russia and India(BHARAT). Apart from their long-standing bilateral ties, Putin and Modi have often spoken about their personal rapport as well. Their last meeting took place in Beijing.

What can we expect from Modi-Putin meet?

• A deal between India(BHARAT) and Russia for the fifth-generation fighter jet Sukhoi-57 could be finalized during the meeting.
• The India(BHARAT)n Air Force currently needs modern combat aircraft, and the Sukhoi-57 is considered well-suited for India(BHARAT).
• HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) already has the necessary infrastructure to manufacture this aircraft.
• Russia is ready to share the Sukhoi-57’s technology and source code with India(BHARAT) — a factor that could make India(BHARAT) favor this jet.
• India(BHARAT)n Air Force is also preparing to procure more S-400 air defense systems from Russia.
• Out of five squadrons, India(BHARAT) has already received three. During Vladimir Putin’s visit, discussions for purchasing additional S-400 batteries could be finalized.
