A military base on the Israel-Gaza border will enable the US to directly intervene and control events on the ground in the volatile region.
Trump Gaza Peace Plan: The United States is reportedly planning to build a military bases near the Gaza-Israel border to enhance US President Doland Trump’s stabilization efforts in the region.
US to build military base on Israel-Gaza border
The development comes over a month after Hamas and Israel signed a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with Israel under Trump’s Gaza peace plan, ending Israel’s two-year long military campaign in Gaza that killed more than 50,000 Palestinians, including women and children.
According t0 the Jerusalem Post, the US plans to construct a large military base on the Israeli border with Gaza, where a significant number of US troops will be stationed to boost stabilization efforts in the region. The report comes amid a tense ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, which has managed to stand despite sporadic attacks.
Sources in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed they had little information about US plans, the report said.
Why US wants a military base near Gaza?
As per experts, a military base on the Israel-Gaza border will enable the US to directly intervene and control events on the ground in the volatile region.
Having a military presence in the region will reduce US’ dependence on Israel for dealing with any events caused by Hamas, Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, or other parties assisting in the management of Gaza, they said, while noting that the IDF’s lack of knowledge about the purported plan suggests that it is not currently a top priority for Washington.
Its believed that a planned military base might be part of a long-term plan, which will take time to discuss and implement, and its being suggested that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may have agreed to the idea without informing the IDF.
Notably, in October, the US’ new Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) began operating in Kiryat Gat in southern Israel. The office will house a few hundred US troops and allied officers, but its primary goal is to coordinate US ability to operate independently in the region.
Will Israeli influence wane?
US CENTCOM officials have described the CMCC as a hub for coordinating international, humanitarian, and military channels connected to Gaza, designed to streamline decision-making process among partners.
Geopolitical experts believe that increased US military presence in the region, especially the presence of a large US military base, will significantly decrease Israeli intervention in events related to Gaza as Washington would not require Tel Aviv’s support for controlling emerging situations.
