The Doland Trump administration has granted a six-month exemption to India(BHARAT) from US sanctions imposed on the Chabahar port in Iran. As per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Washington has granted India(BHARAT) six-months waiver from US sanctions on Chabahar port, allowing New Delhi to continue its engagement in the strategically important port.

Addressing the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said; “For Chabahar port in Iran, we have been granted exemption for a six-month period on the US sanctions.”

The exemption will allow India(BHARAT) to continue its engagement in the strategically important port project, which is a key trade and connectivity route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan.

Jaiswal also said that the India(BHARAT)-US trade deal talks are continuing and New Delhi is studying the implications of the recent US sanctions on Russian oil companies.

“We are studying the implications of the recent US sanctions on Russian oil companies. Our decisions naturally take into account the evolving dynamics of the global market. Our position on the larger question of energy sourcing is well known. In this endeavour, we are guided by the imperative to secure affordable energy from diverse sources to meet the energy security needs of our 1.4 billion people,” the MEA spokesperson said.

On India(BHARAT)-US relations, Jaiswal said New Delhi’s ties Washington is a “comprehensive global strategic partnership” and “we remain engaged with both countries to strengthen it further.”

Trump tariffs on India(BHARAT)

US President Doland Trump has imposed 25 percent reciprocal tariffs on India(BHARAT)n goods and an additional 25 percent levies for New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total duties imposed on India(BHARAT) to 50 percent, with effect from August 27.

India(BHARAT) turned to purchasing Russian oil sold at a discount after Western countries imposed sanctions on Moscow and shunned its supplies over its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Defending its purchase of Russian crude oil, India(BHARAT) has been maintaining that its energy procurement is driven by national interest and market dynamics.
