Turkey-Israel war: In a major concern for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Turkey, which is re-emerging as a major player in the middle east, is emerging as a significant threat for Israel, and is devising a plot to corner the Jewish nation by engaging Jerusalem in conflicts on multiple fronts.

How Turkey is emerging as a major threat for Israel?

According to defense experts, while Israel has largely managed to subdue Iran to an extent, primarily after the 12-day Israel-Iran war earlier this year, the threat from Turkey is growing due to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ambitions to establish Turkish hegemony in the region, and his efforts to present Ankara as the leader of the Muslim world.

Analysts believe Israel must adapt to deal with changing power scenario in the region, and can no longer rely on past military strategies which have guided its defensive and offensive strategy with Iran being at front and center of its military plans.

Why Erdogan plans to engage Israel on multiple fronts?

For decades, Israel believed it could contain or eliminate major threats without any strategic shift. The Jewish state believed it could contain Hezbollah, isolate Hamas, and weaken Iran. However, these assumptions have collapsed, and while Iran’s regional network has indeed weakened, Tehran has begun rebuilding at a rapid pace after the war with Israel, they say.

Additionally, while Israel may have ‘defeated’ Hamas in Gaza, the Palestinian militant group’s ideology survives, and the recent ceasefire would give it time need to re-establish its network in Palestine. Ahmed al-Sharaa’s Syrian regime, while not explicitly hostile towards Israel, unlike Bashar al-Assad, remains unstable, and the Houthis remains a major threat in the Red Sea, the experts note.

Geopolitical experts fear that Israel may soon face a scenario where its engaged on multiple fronts simultaneously, and this would give Turkey to put its plans for regional hegemony into motion, which are contrary to Israeli security and strategic interests.

Will Turkey replace Iran as Israel’s primary foe?

In recent years, under President Erdogan, Turkey has become increasingly assertive and ideologically aggressive, and many experts believe that it could in near future replace Iran as Israel’s most immediate threat, which is a worrying development for Jerusalem.

The Jewish state must understand these emerging challenges to shape a new security strategy, and the changes must be made now, before Israel is faced with the next crisis at its doorstep.

Experts believe Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aims to re-establish a modern version of the Ottoman Empire, and expand Ankara’s influence in the Islamic world by “reviving the past glory of Turkey”. Turkey’s stance on issues like Gaza and Syria, coupled with its aggressive rhetoric against Israel, pose a strategic threat Jerusalem cannot ignore.

Notably, earlier this year, Turkey inked a preliminary deal with Britain and Germany to acquire a fleet of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, triggering alarm bells amongst Ankara’s rivals in the Middle East, including Israel, Greece, and Cyprus.
