New Delhi: Chinese scientists have successfully tested a maglev train that reached a speed of 700 kilometers per hour in just two seconds. It is so fast that it is difficult to see it clearly with the naked eye. Scientists from China’s National University of Defense Technology tested the superfast train on Thursday, December 25. The train, weighing approximately one ton, was run on a special 400-meter-long track.

Engineers Had Been Working On This Project For The Past 10 Years

During the test, the train reached record speed in just a few moments and was then safely brought to a stop. Scientists say this is the fastest superconducting electric maglev train to date.

The team of engineers had been working on this project for the past 10 years. In January of this year, the train reached a speed of 648 kilometers per hour on the same track, but now it has surpassed the 700 km/h mark, setting a new world record.

Maglev Trains Don’t Touch the Tracks

A video of the test has emerged, showing the train speeding along the track like a flash of lightning, leaving a slight blur in its wake. The unique feature of a maglev train is that it does not touch the tracks.

Powerful magnets lift the train into the air and propel it forward. Since there is no contact between the wheels and the track, there is no friction, allowing the train to travel at very high speeds.

Scientists say that the same technology used to propel this train could also be used in the future for launching rockets. If this technology is adopted for passenger trains, travel between major cities could be completed in just a few minutes.
