Before the parade rehearsal on the streets of Beijing, the HQ-29 air defense system has been seen going with missile containers on a six-axle launch vehicle. According to experts, the interceptors present in these containers of 1.5 meters diameter are advanced interceptors of China’s existing HQ-9 and HQ-19 family. It is being claimed that China gets the capability of high-altitude ballistic missile defense as well as low earth orbit (LEO) satellite interception from this. This is why the Chinese media has started calling it “Double Barrel Satellite Hunter”.

What is the capability of the HQ-29 air defense system?

With the HQ-29 air defense system, China has created a strong shield against advanced ballistic missiles. However, the HQ-19 interceptor currently possessed by China, like the American THAAD, is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles at limited altitudes, while the HQ-9 mainly intercepts objects at terminal defense. According to the report, the range of HQ-29 is more than 500 kilometers, which allows it to not only intercept advanced ballistic missiles, but it can also intercept satellites and targets in space like the Russian S-500 air defense.

Can it encounter Brahmos?

According to experts, it is not impossible for HQ-29 to intercept Brahmos, but it is definitely very difficult. Intercepting Brahmos depends on many conditions. No air defense system in the world can easily intercept Brahmos, even if it is the Russian S-500. The biggest reason is that Brahmos missile flies at a very low altitude from the ground and in such a situation it becomes very difficult for the air defense radar to track it. If the Brahmos missile is detected from a sufficient distance in its terminal phase and HQ-29 is also made capable of low-altitude interception, then only it can intercept Brahmos, but if this is not the case then it will be impossible for it to stop the Brahmos missile. Its chances of success against Brahmos are extremely low.
