Concrete barricades, sealed borders: WATCH how Delhi Police secures capital as farmers' protest intensify

As farmers’ protests intensify in the national capital, the Delhi police have put forth a slew of security measures to avoid any untoward incident, especially in central Delhi.

Earlier today, security officials deployed tear gas bombs in the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border as farmers marched towards the national capital under the slogan of ‘Delhi Chalo’.

Meanwhile, farmers in Haryana were seen forcibly removing cement barricades installed to restrict their movement and openly violating Section 144.

‘Plan B’

A police official said that officials have been asked to chart out a ‘Plan B’ in case things go south and protesting farmers from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan enter the city and try to reach the Parliament.

Several security personnel in anti-riot gear have been deployed strategically while metal and concrete barricades regulating access to several key roads have also been put into place.

All Parliament gates have been barricaded and extra security personnel including from the paramilitary forces have been positioned around the building. The barricades installed near Parliament have been fitted with barred wire on top.

Security has also been heightened in the residences of the prime minister, Union Minister Amit Shah and Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda.

Borders sealed

The three borders of Delhi — Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur — have been sealed and the police have installed multiple layers of barricading at roads leading to the Parliament and Central Delhi.

Arrangements have been made at the Vikas Marg — which connects east Delhi to the central part of the national capital — to place cement barricades and sand-loaded dumpers at the centre of the road.

National Highway-9, heading towards Akshardham from Ghazipur, has been barricaded with cranes and heavy earthmovers.

The police intensified the checking of vehicles to identify protestors trying to enter Delhi in commercial or private vehicles.

Metro gates to be closed

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Tuesday issued an advisory stating that while operations will continue, some gates at a few stations will be closed in view of the farmers’ protest.

These stations are: 1. Central Secretariat 2. Rajiv Chowk 3. Udyog Bhawan 4. Patel Chowk 5. Mandi House 6. Barakhamba Road 7. Janpath 8. Khan Market 9. Lok Kalyan Marg.
