Covid causes major Las Vegas Strip cancellations

Popular Las Vegas Strip headliners occasionally need to postpone or cancel engagements for various reasons, including illness and injury.

Of course, everything came to a standstill on the Strip on March 17, 2020, when the Covid pandemic forced Gov. Steve Sisolak to shut down all hotel casinos for 78 days until June 4, 2020. But the lingering effects of the pandemic continue to reappear and disrupt the normal routine of the Strip.

Legendary rock star John Fogerty, known for his Creedence Clearwater Revival hits  "Proud Mary," "Fortunate Son," and "Bad Moon Rising," as well as solo tunes "The Old Man Down The Road" and "Centerfield," cancelled nine shows at the Encore Theater at Wynn Resorts'  (WYNN) - Get Free Report Wynn Las Vegas Nov. 4-21, 2020, because of the covid pandemic. He returned in October 2021 to resume performances.

Fogerty also postponed six shows originally scheduled Feb. 23-March 5, 2022, to Nov. 9-19, 2022, for unspecified reasons.

Parrothead icon Jimmy Buffet, who passed away Sept. 1, performed his tropical rock show at MGM Resorts International's  (MGM) - Get Free Report Grand Garden on March 4 and March 11, 2023, after postponing shows on Oct. 8 and Oct. 15, 2022, for unspecified health reasons.

Superstar singer Adele rescheduled her 24-show “Weekends With Adele” residency at Caesars Entertainment's  (CZR) - Get Free Report Colosseum at Caesars Palace that was originally set for every Friday and Saturday from Jan. 21 through April 16, 2022. She needed to cancel those shows, as members of her crew contracted Covid and some of the set pieces designed for the performance were not ready.

Adele postponed the residency to Nov. 18, 2022, with a break from Christmas through Jan. 20, then it continued through March 25. Adele extended her residency by 34 more dates, running from June 16, 2023, to Nov. 4, 2023.

More recently, Adele needed to walk back her friendly and informal  strolls into the crowd for interactions at her shows after a backup singer and crew members contracted Covid. The "Hello" singer is determined to complete her residency on Nov. 4 without any postponements or cancellations and may extend her residency into next year.

Comedians Martin and Short postpone shows

Worries of another outbreak of the Covid pandemic prompted the hilarious comedy team of Steve Martin and Martin Short to abruptly postpone their co-headlining shows at the Encore Theater on Sept. 22-23, Martin said in a humorous post on X, formerly Twitter.

"Dear fans and enemies, Unfortunately our sold-out shows at the Wynn in Las Vegas this Friday and Saturday has to be postponed because of rampant Covid in our crew and one other essential guy. We are sorry for any inconvenience, but we are moving to mid-December, where your tickets will be honored with an added "date moving tax," of nine thousand dollars," Martin wrote.

Late night hosts cancel special show

The Martin-Short postponements are not the only shows in Las Vegas affected by Covid lately. Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel said that his "Strike Force Three" performance at Dolby Live at Park MGM with fellow hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon, scheduled for Sept. 23, has been cancelled since Kimmel has been diagnosed with Covid.

"Well, Las Vegas, I got Covid, and sadly, we need to cancel this weekend's Strike Force Three show. I could never live with myself if I got my hometown friends sick. Thanks to all who purchased tickets. Everyone will get full refunds and we will try to reschedule if possible @JimmyFallon @StephenAtHome @StrikeForceFive," Kimmel said in an X post.
