New Delhi: During Diwali this year, Delhi’s air quality remained poor, but unlike last year, the National capital’s air was significantly less toxic, as per reports. On Tuesday morning, around 5 AM, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) level was recorded between 300 and 350, which is almost half of what it was last year.

In different areas, the AQI levels were recorded as follows: Dwarka Sector – 338, Burari – 387, IGI Airport – 299, Pitampura – 343, Mundka – 350, Anand Vihar – 341, Chandni Chowk – 341, Mandir Marg – 328, and ITO – 347. Lodhi Road had 315 points, and Pusa recorded 351 points.

At 6 AM, AQI levels were:

Bawana – 418, Wazirpur – 408, Jahangirpuri – 404, Burari Crossing – 393, Shadipur – 393, Dwarka – 389, and Anand Vihar – 352. According to the CPCB, Delhi’s overall AQI was 346. Major Dhyan Chand Stadium recorded 358, Aya Nagar – 349, and Chandni Chowk – 347.

Here are some of the key details:

  • Last year, on the night of October 31, Delhi-NCR’s AQI crossed 900 points.
  • In NCR’s Vaishali, it was 911 points, while Delhi’s Karkardooma recorded 806.
  • Last year, in almost all areas of the capital, the AQI remained around 600.
  • However, this time, Delhi residents could breathe a relatively sigh of relief.
  • On Monday, Diwali day, Delhi’s air quality remained poor, with pollution levels recorded in the ‘Red Zone’ at 34 out of 38 monitoring stations, indicating air quality ranging from ‘Very Poor’ to ‘Severe.’
  • According to official data, Delhi’s 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) at 4 PM was 345, which falls under the ‘Very Poor’ category, compared to 326 recorded on Sunday.

AQI crossed 400 on Monday

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) ‘SAMIR’ app, four monitoring stations had already reported air quality in the ‘Severe’ category, with AQI levels above 400. These included Dwarka – 417, Ashok Vihar – 404, Wazirpur – 423, and Anand Vihar – 404.

Around 30 monitoring stations in Delhi reported AQI in the ‘Very Poor’ category, with levels above 300. According to the data, by afternoon, 31 out of 38 monitoring stations recorded air quality as ‘Very Poor,’ while three stations were in the ‘Severe’ category. There are concerns that air quality in Delhi could reach the ‘Severe’ category on Tuesday and Wednesday.
