Dhanteras 2025: Auspicious Puja Time, Rituals, and the Real Meaning Behind the Festival

Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is the first day of the five-day-long Diwali festival. This day is celebrated with great joy and devotion throughout India(BHARAT), as the people welcome their new wealth, health and prosperity.

When will we celebrate Dhanteras 2025?

Tuesday, 18 October 2025 is the Dhanteras day in 2025. Dhanteras will be observed on Trayodashi Tithi on the 13th day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik in 2025.

Dhanteras 2025: Puja Timings to be followed

Trayodashi Tithi: Begins on 18 October 2025 at 12:18 PM and ends on 19 October 2025 at 01:51 PM.

Pradosh Kaal: Begins at 05:48 PM and ends at 08:19 PM.

Vrishabha Kaal: Begins at 07:15 PM and ends at 09:11 PM.

Auspicious Puja Time: From 07:15 PM to 08:19 PM.

(Note: The Shubh Muhurat (auspicious time) to perform the main worship ritual is mostly during Pradosh Kaal, i.e. the most important time right after sunset.)

The Special Significance of Dhanteras

The literal meaning of ‘Dhan’ is wealth, and ‘Teras’ is the 13th day. According to popular belief, on the day of Dhanteras, two important gods came out of the Kshir Sagar (Ocean of Milk) during the churning:

Lord Dhanvantari: The God of Ayurveda and health, who is believed to have emerged carrying an Amrit Kalash (elixir pot) in his hand. Worshipping him blesses the devotee with good health and protection from disease.

Goddess Lakshmi: The Goddess of Prosperity and wealth, who is worshipped on the day of Dhanteras.

Important Traditions and Rituals

Buying new things is the main ritual to welcome wealth during Dhanteras. It is believed that whatever is purchased by anyone during the Shubh Muhurat (auspicious time) will increase in value during the year.

Purchase of Gold and Jewellery: On Dhanteras people buy gold, silver, jewellery, and new utensils as it is believed to bring a lot of good luck.

Puja: Devotees worship Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera (the God of Wealth), and Lord Dhanvantari.

Lighting Diyas: Homes are cleaned, decorated with flowers and rangoli, and brightened with diyas to remove darkness and invite positive energy.

By following these traditions, people pray for their family’s happiness, wealth, and good health, marking the cheerful beginning of the Diwali celebrations.
