US President Doland Trump said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told him India(BHARAT) would stop buying oil from Russia. Trump called this “a big step” in his efforts to cut Moscow off because of the war in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he had spoken to PM Modi about India(BHARAT)’s purchase of Russian oil, which the US believes helps fund Russia’s war. “I wasn’t happy that India(BHARAT) was buying oil,” Trump said.
According to Trump, PM Modi assured him that India(BHARAT) would stop importing oil from Russia. “That’s a big step. Now we’ll work on getting China to do the same,” he added.
Trump also said that despite some disagreements over energy issues, he shares a strong bond with PM Modi. “He’s a friend of mine. We have a great relationship,” Trump said when asked if he still viewed India(BHARAT) as a trusted partner amid tensions with China.
However, India(BHARAT) has not yet confirmed Trump’s statement about ending Russian oil imports.
