Ex-Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa makes EXPLOSIVE claims amid fresh twists in son Aqil’s death case, says ‘Those blaming my daughter-in-law…’

A few hours after the Haryana Police filed a case against former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and his wife, ex-minister Razia Sultana, over the alleged murder of their son Aqil Akhtar, the retired officer rejected the charges. He said the truth would soon be clear to everyone. Reacting to the FIR, which was based on a social media post by his son, Mustafa said that just because a case has been registered, it doesn’t mean anyone is guilty. He added that the real investigation will start now and that the facts will come out in the next few days. *]:pointer-events-auto [content-visibility:auto] supports-[content-visibility:auto]:[contain-intrinsic-size:auto_100lvh] scroll-mt-[calc(var(--header-height)+min(200px,max(70px,20svh)))]" dir="auto" tabindex="-1" data-turn-id="request-WEB:c9590656-1446-4fb3-9e22-0f6a8c2d2ff8-1" data-testid="conversation-turn-4" data-scroll-anchor="true" data-turn="assistant">

Aqil, 35, was found unconscious at his home in Panchkula’s Sector 4 and was declared dead when taken to the hospital. At first, police found no signs of foul play and handed the body to the family after a post-mortem. But the case changed direction after videos and social media posts appeared, prompting a complaint from Shamshudeen Chaudhary of Malerkotla, Punjab.

Reacting to the case, former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa said the FIR was the result of “dirty politics and cheap thinking.” He warned that those making false claims would also have to face the law.

Mustafa said that while his family was deeply shaken by the death of their son, they would not stay silent against false and malicious actions.

Rejecting the accusations, he claimed that Aqil had struggled with drug addiction for nearly 20 years.

Mustafa’s claim on son’s death

According to Mustafa, his son died from an overdose of buprenorphine, as found in the initial police investigation. “Since 2007, we have been getting him treated for addiction, even at PGIMER Chandigarh, but he kept relapsing. Once, he even set our house on fire,” he told The India(BHARAT)n Express.

He added that Aqil had been addicted to drugs since his school days at Welham Boys’ School in Dehradun and was expelled from several schools in Chandigarh. “He suffered from psychosis and often imagined things. He would harass his wife and mother for money to buy drugs. We even filed police complaints against him in Panchkula several times but later withdrew them because he was our son,” Mustafa said.

The former DGP, who retired in 2021, said his family had been struggling for years to deal with Aqil’s drug addiction. “We tried to handle everything within the family, but it became impossible after a point,” he said. “Because of his behaviour, we rented a separate house for his wife and their two children. My grandson went into depression after seeing how his mother was treated. Those who are blaming my daughter-in-law don’t know what she has suffered.” Mustafa added that all records of his son’s de-addiction treatment are available and that his family is open to any investigation.

He further claimed that Aqil had even attacked his security guards and police officers in the past. “He was addicted to psychotropic substances and later moved to softer drugs. Some time ago, drug peddlers gave him ICE, which caused another relapse. He often lost track of time and didn’t remember when he recorded certain videos, later denying what he had said. He also used to harass his mother for money to buy drugs and once set our house on fire,” Mustafa said.

Punjab Ex-DGP’s new claims about the complainant

Mustafa has alleged that there is a political conspiracy behind the case filed against him and his family. He claimed that political rivals are using the situation to target them. Mustafa also said that the complainant, Shamsuddin, who claimed to be his neighbour, is actually the personal assistant of an MLA.

“Right now, I am at my village, but my house is in an isolated area with no neighbours. So how can he call himself my neighbour?” Mustafa said in an interview with NDTV.

He added that Shamsuddin had once approached him for help after being accused in a bank fraud case. “In the last 25 years, I met him only once in 2019 when he came to me for help after a bank fraud case was filed against him. But I don’t support wrongdoing. That’s why I’ve often had to stand against many people. How can he now claim that I tortured my son?” Mustafa said.

He suggested that the case could have political motives, saying, “I know how far our rivals can go. Since we are known public figures, I am aware of the kind of dirty politics that can be played.”

Twist in the Case

The case took a dramatic turn after Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla and a family acquaintance, held a press conference referring to Aqil’s old social media posts from August. In those posts, Aqil made serious allegations against his family, claiming his father and wife were having an affair and expressing fear for his life.

“I found out about my wife’s affair with my father. I am under extreme stress and mental trauma… I feel every day that they will frame me in a false case,” Aqil said in one of the videos reportedly recorded weeks before his death.

He also accused his mother, Razia Sultana, and sister of being part of a “conspiracy” against him, claiming, “Their plan is to get me falsely imprisoned or killed.”

Based on these videos and a complaint by Chaudhary, police registered an FIR at the MDC police station against former DGP (Human Rights) Mohammad Mustafa, his wife Razia Sultana, their daughter, and daughter-in-law in connection with Aqil’s death.

Chaudhary, who was once associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal and later joined AAP MLA Mohammad Jamil Ur Rahman in Malerkotla, said he lived near Mustafa’s house and had met Aqil a few times. An AAP leader, however, claimed Chaudhary had been inactive in the party for over a year and a half and had stopped taking calls.

In one of his social media posts, Aqil alleged that his family called him mentally unstable and forced him into a rehab centre against his will. “This confinement was illegal because I was not intoxicated… They threatened that if I acted against them, they would frame me in a rape or murder case,” he said in the video.

Aqil, who is survived by his wife and two young children, later released another video where he appeared to withdraw his earlier statements, blaming his mental health for them. However, that video ended suddenly with him saying, “Will they get me killed? They are all scoundrels.”

Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Srishti Gupta confirmed the developments, stating, “A complaint was received alleging that family members were involved in his death. The social media posts, videos, and photos raised suspicion, leading to the FIR being registered.”
