‘Frightened of…’: Rahul Gandhi launches 5-point attack at PM Modi over Trump’s Russian oil claim
Early this morning, Trump surprised reporters by claiming that India will temporarily stop buying oil from Russia. According to Trump, PM Modi personally gave him this assurance.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of being “frightened” of Doland Trump. His remarks came just hours after the US President claimed that PM Modi had promised to stop buying oil from Russia. Rahul Gandhi, further took a jibe at PM Modi, saying he repeatedly lets Trump set the agenda. He pointed out that Modi kept sending congratulatory messages on the Gaza deal between Hamas and Israel despite being ignored, cancelled the Finance Minister’s visit to the US, and did not challenge Trump’s comments on Operation Sindoor.
On X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi wrote, “PM Modi is scared of Trump.
- He lets Trump decide and announce that India(BHARAT) will stop buying Russian oil.
- Keeps sending him congratulatory messages despite repeated snubs.
- Cancels the Finance Minister’s visit to America.
- Skips the Sharm el-Sheikh summit.
- Does not deny Trump’s comments on Operation Sindoor.”
PM Modi is frightened of Trump.
1. Allows Trump to decide and announce that India(BHARAT) will not buy Russian oil.
2. Keeps sending congratulatory messages despite repeated snubs.
3. Canceled the Finance Minister’s visit to America.
4. Skipped Sharm el-Sheikh.
5. Doesn’t contradict him…— Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) October 16, 2025
Earlier, speaking at the White House, Trump had called PM Modi “a friend of mine” and said they share a great relationship, despite some differences over energy policy. He was responding to a question about whether he considered India(BHARAT) a reliable partner amid growing tensions with China.
However, India(BHARAT) has not confirmed Trump’s statement about ending Russian oil imports. Trump said Modi’s assurance was part of his diplomatic efforts to reduce Russia’s oil income.
“Now we have to get China to do the same thing,” Trump added, saying that pressuring China would be “relatively easy compared to what we just did in the Middle East last week.”
Meanwhile, Russia remains India(BHARAT)’s largest source of oil, making up 34% of India(BHARAT)’s imports in September. However, shipments have fallen 10% in the first eight months of 2025, according to Kpler, a commodities and shipping market tracker.
