Glenn Maxwell rewrites record books with fifth T20I hundred in AUS vs WI match in Adelaide

Glenn Maxwell levelled Rohit Sharma for most centuries in men’s T20Is with his fifth hundred on Sunday as Australia defeated West Indies by 34 runs in the second T20I at the Adelaide Oval. Maxwell hit a total of 120 not out off 55 balls as Australia posted 241/4 batting first. His whirlwind innings comprised of 12 fours and eight sixes.

After Australia were reduced to 64/3 with David Warner (22), Josh Inglis (4) and Mitchell Marsh (29) getting out cheaply, Maxwell stitched an 82-run stand with Marcus Stoinis (16) and later a 95-run partnership with Tim David (31 not out) to take Australia to a comfortable position.

Maxwell got to his hundred in the penultimate over of the innings off Romario Shepherd. He got to the landmark with a four to cover.

The most interesting thing is that at the end of 15 overs, Maxwell was on 67 off 34, but scored 34 runs in the next 16 balls to get to his hundred and added 20 more runs in next five balls before the innings came to an end.

Another amazing fact is that Maxwell took 25 balls to get to his fifty and exactly the same number of balls to go from 50 to his 100.

“It was good fun, that’s for sure. Always good batting here, we saw in the Big Bash how good the wickets were during the tournament. The wicket was nice and true. I have always rely on my hand speed, worked for me today. Give myself the best chance always. My parents are here In Adelaide as well. Nice to play a positive knock,” Maxwell said after his record-equalling hundred.

In reply, West Indies could only reach 207/9 with captain Rovman Powell smashing 63 off 36 balls.

Australia have won both matches so far in the three-match series with the last T20I scheduled for 13 February at Perth.
