How many posts are vacant in 11 AIIMS across country including Delhi, RTI answer will shock you…

The All India(BHARAT) Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), one of the country’s top hospitals, is grappling with a shortage of faculty doctors. Nearly four out of every ten sanctioned faculty positions across the 11 AIIMS are vacant, highlighting the severe staff shortage at the country’s premier government hospitals. Meanwhile, the number of patients in these hospitals is steadily increasing. This information has emerged from RTI responses obtained by TOI.

According to the information, 1,600 out of 4,099 faculty positions at AIIMS, or approximately 39%, are vacant. This has raised concerns about the impact on patient care, specialist services, and medical education. Data based on RTI responses from 11 AIIMS across various states points to widespread shortages in both the older, established AIIMS and the newer institutions.

How many posts are vacant in which AIIMS?

AIIMS Delhi is the oldest and largest in the country. Out of 1,306 sanctioned faculty positions, 524 are vacant in core departments such as medicine, surgery, anesthesia, pediatrics, neurology, oncology, and emergency care. Many newer AIIMS face even greater shortages.

AIIMS Jodhpur is the worst affected, with 189 out of 405 faculty positions, or 46.7%, vacant. AIIMS Gorakhpur has 45.5% vacant positions. AIIMS Jammu, meanwhile, has a 44.3% shortage. AIIMS Kalyani and AIIMS Bilaspur also have more than 40% vacant positions. AIIMS Nagpur has 137 vacant positions out of 373 sanctioned positions, which amounts to 36.7% vacancies.

The shortage is slightly smaller at other institutions – but still significant. AIIMS Bathinda has a 37.4% faculty shortage, AIIMS Raipur 34.8%, AIIMS Bhubaneswar 26%, and AIIMS Bhopal 25.6%.

What are health experts saying?

Health experts say that chronic faculty shortages in teaching hospitals impact outpatient services, surgery schedules, ICU supervision, and the training of undergraduate and postgraduate doctors. This is because senior faculty have to perform multiple roles—clinical, academic, and administrative.

Responding to concerns about staff shortages, AIIMS Delhi’s media cell in-charge, Reema Dada, stated that recruitment efforts are ongoing. She added that interviews are ongoing, and that the process of filling vacant positions is being conducted regularly. AIIMS hospitals treat millions of patients every year, many of whom are referred from district and state hospitals for complex treatments.

RTI data obtained by TOI reveals a significant gap between rapidly expanding infrastructure and the pace of faculty recruitment. This raises questions about whether India(BHARAT)’s premier medical institutions have adequate staff to meet the growing healthcare demand.
