IIT Kharagpur’s Faizan Ahmed Was ‘Stabbed & Shot’, Forensic Report Reveals After 2 Years

New Delhi: Faizan Ahmed, a student at IIT-Kharagpur, was found in a semi-decomposed state in the hostel room of the premier institute in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district on October 14, 2022. Now, two years later, a recent forensic report has claimed that the 23-year-old mechanical engineering student was brutally murdered. Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the autopsy was conducted for a second time. The father of the student, who hailed from Dibrugarh in Assam, had moved the high court seeking the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the death of Ahmed to bring to the fore the reasons of his death.

According to the second forensic report by Dr A.K. Gupta, there was a gunshot wound on the upper left side of Faizan’s neck and a stab wound on the right side of his neck, reported ThePrint. According to sources, the report also mentions the police had not done any videography of these particular injuries during its primary investigation, or while conducting the first postmortem at Midnapore Medical College on 15 October, 2022, reported ThePrint.

Later in 2022, at least three days before Faizan’s body was discovered, his family had already stated that their son had been murdered. The room where the body was found was not Faizan’s hostel room. Following the second postmortem ordered by the Calcutta High Court and conducted at the Kolkata Police Morgue on May 27, 2023, it was disclosed that Faizan’s skull’s right temporal bone was missing, matching still photographs taken on the day his decomposed body was discovered. Furthermore, the report dismissed poisoning as a cause of death, which had been initially suspected in an earlier report submitted to the High Court.

News in Brief: Ahmed, a mechanical engineering student was found dead in the hostel of IIT Kharagpur on October 14 last year. The authority of the institute claimed that he died by suicide, while the Ahmed’s family alleged that he was killed. The family filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court over his unnatural death. Ahmed was a resident of Assam’s Dibrugarh district. Notably, the decomposed body of 23-year-old Faizan Ahmed, was found in room C-205 of the Lala Lajpat Rai Hall of Residence in the institute premises on October 14 last year. Two days later, his body was buried at the Amolapatty burial ground in Dibrugarh town.

On March 29 last year, the Calcutta High Court ordered the exhumation of Faizan’s body from his hometown in Dibrugarh, Assam. The purpose was to conduct a forensic examination by Dr. A.K. Gupta, a retired professor of forensic medicine and technology appointed by the court. Dr. Gupta was tasked with reviewing Faizan’s post-mortem reports to determine the cause and circumstances of his death. Faizan’s decomposed remains were transported in plywood cartons to the Kolkata Police morgue on May 24, 2024. The final report by Dr Gupta in the case is expected to be submitted later this month.
