IND vs ENG Highlights 3rd Test Day 2: Duckett's 133 not out helps England reach 207/2 at close of play

17:16 (IST)

That’s it from us in our coverage of Day 2 of the third Test in Rajkot, with the match very much in the balance at the moment following England’s fiery response with the bat in the evening session, powered by Ben Duckett’s unbeaten 133. Can the Englishmen eclipse India’s solid first innings total of 445? Or can Rohit Sharma and Co get rid of Duckett early on the ‘Moving Day’ and try and eke out a first innings lead, however slim it may turn out to be.

Join us tomorrow morning in our coverage of Day 3 to find out.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test Day 2 Live Score

After 35 overs, England 207/2 (Ben Duckett 133, Joe Root 9)

STUMPS ON DAY 2 — Ravichandran Ashwin bowls out the final over of the day, conceding seven off it including a boundary to Root off the final delivery as England end the day on 207/2, trailing the hosts by another 238 runs with eight wickets in hand, scoring at nearly six-an-over.

What’s worse for the Indians is the fact that they burn a review for the second time today in the final over after a loud appeal for LBW against Duckett in the fourth delivery. Turns out the ball was pitching marginally outside off. Was a review more out of hope than anything else, given it was Duckett’s wicket that was on line. Will that come back to bite the Indians on the third day or not is something that remains to be seen.

After 34 overs, England 200/2 (Ben Duckett 131, Joe Root 4)

Bumrah is brought back shortly before stumps, with Rohit hoping for another wicket — preferrably that of Duckett — before the two teams head back to the hotel. Just three off Bumrah’s eighth over, including a brace to Root in the fourth delivery after he guides the ball behind square on the leg side. Siraj concedes just one in the following over, with Duckett retaining strike for what should be the final over of the day with a single off the last delivery. Also brings up the 200 in the process.

After 32 overs, England 196/2 (Ben Duckett 129, Joe Root 2)

SIX! Duckett gives the Indians a reminder of the fact that they are yet to dismiss him, and he continues to pose a massive threat to their hopes of going 2-1 up in this series. Duckett changes his stance in the blink of an eye and ends up switch-hitting Jadeja for a maximum over the cover fence. 11 off Jadeja’s fourth over with the left-arm spinner having conceded 33 so far today. Siraj keeps it tidy from the other end, conceding just three singles. Former captain Joe Root, meanwhile, joins Duckett at the centre and is off to a cautious start.

After 30 overs, England 182/2 (Ben Duckett 119, )

FOUR! Out comes the reverse sweep from Pope as he beats the fielder putting in a slide near backward point. Two balls later, it’s Duckett’s turn as he goes for a slog sweep behind square. What makes it worse is the fact that Patidar was standing at deep square and somehow didn’t notice. Siraj, however, brings the Indians back in the game by getting rid of Ollie Pope in the final delivery of a tidy over and breaking the 93-run second-wicket partnership in the process.

OUT! Superb review by the Indians after an unsuccessful LBW appeal by Siraj against Pope. The ball did hit the batter above the knee roll but Pope was on the backfoot at the same time. Skipper Rohit might have made the 'T' sign out of desperation, and would he be thankful for trusting his gut with this one as HawkEye would show the ball to be smashing into the leg stump. After 28 overs, England 158/1 (Ben Duckett 108, Ollie Pope 32)

Change of ends for Jadeja as he replaces Bumrah, with Siraj likely to continue from the other end. FOUR! Pope brings up the 150 for the visitors with a paddle towards the fine leg fence off the first delivery. Pope then collects another boundary three balls later, this time with a ‘Dilscoop’ that sends the ball over the keeper’s head and away for a boundary. And if that’s not all, he collects a boundary off the final delivery of the following over, glancing at an inswinging delivery from Siraj towards fine leg.

After 26 overs, England 148/1 (Ben Duckett 106, Ollie Pope 20)

FOUR! Drilled down the ground off an overpitched delivery from Mohammed Siraj and that brings up a third Test hundred for Ben Duckett, in just 88 deliveries at that! The left-handed has stamped his authority on the Indian attack from the word go, collecting 20 boundaries and a six along the way. Follows it up with another four in the very next ball, pulling a short-of-length ball over square leg.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test Day 2 Live Score

After 22 overs, England 131/1 (Ben Duckett 92, Ollie Pope 18)

India lose a review after an unsuccessful LBW appeal against Duckett in the final delivery of Bumrah’s fifth over. Was an inswinging yorker from Bumrah that the southpaw appeared to have brought his bat down to in the nick of time. Replays too show a big spike on UltraEdge at the time of the ball passing close to the bottom edge, though it hits the ground almost at the same time and that could’ve also contributed to the deflection. Good decision by umpire Dharmasena. SIX! FOUR! Duckett decides to get down on one knee and slog-sweep Ashwin for a maximum over deep midwicket. Ashwin responds by shortening his length next up, and the batter this time responds with a pull in front of square. Duckett nearly collects a hat-trick of boundaries after tickling the ball towards fine leg in the final delivery of the over, coming back for a third as some deft footwork by the chasing Jadeja helps save a run for the home team.

Pope keeps the strike with a single off the last delivery. FOUR! Duckett collects his 16th boundary with a pull down the ground off a short-of-length delivery from Ashwin. Single collected on either side of the boundary as England race to 115/1 at nearly six-an-over.

The players make their way back to the centre after the tea interval, and as expected we see a spinner introduced on the other side of the interval. After 6 overs, England 31/0 (Zak Crawley 6, Ben Duckett 19)

FOUR! Duckett doesn’t spare Siraj either, punching a short, wide delivery from the seamer square of the wicket to collect his third boundary inside two overs. He’s assumed charge in this partnership so far, with Crawley happy to take his time at the other end right now.

Six runs conceded by Siraj in what is the final over of the session as England head to tea having collecting 31 runs without losing a single wicket, thanks to an attacking start from Duckett as well as five penalty runs awarded to the visiting team.

We’ll be back in 20 minutes’ time and might just witness the introduction of Ravichandran Ashwin on the other side of the interval.

Mohammed Siraj appears to have recovered from the physical discomfort in the hamstring area that had him hobbling shortly before the fall of the final Indian wicket. Ben Duckett, who’s on strike for the first time in this over, sets off for a single in the third delivery to get off strike. Crawley collects a brace right after with a drive, this time between extra cover and mid off. LBW appeal by Siraj in the fifth delivery but this one was easily missing leg. Another faint LBW appeal in the next ball, and this time Crawley appears to have got a thick inside edge.

After 130.5 overs, India 445 (Mohammed Siraj 3)

Bit of delay before the start of Wood’s second over of the new spell as Siraj needs a bit of spray on his right knee, where he got hit while attempting a reverse sweep off Hartley that led to the LBW appeal. FOUR! Bumrah heaves a pitched up delivery from Wood towards the vacant midwicket fence to collect his third four. Pushes for a second run in the following delivery and this time Siraj starts hobbling while reaching the non-striker’s end to complete the second run. The physio makes his way out to the centre for the second time in less than an over, and this surely isn’t looking good for the Indian camp and might just put a question mark over Siraj’s participation in the remainder of the Test. England burn a review after an unsuccessful appeal for leg-before against Siraj in the fourth delivery, with Stokes reluctantly going for it. The ball was narrowly missing the leg stump. Another LBW appeal by Wood in the very next delivery, this time against Bumrah, and this time umpire Dharmasena raises his finger. It was an off-cutter from the pacer that deceived ‘Boom’, hitting him on the pad bang in front of middle and leg. Bumrah decides to review it, and gets three reds on HawkEye that signal the end of the Indian innings.

India have been bowled out for 445 after opting to bat, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj helping take the home team within touching distance of 450 with a stroke-filled final-wicket stand worth 30.

Bumrah plays a similar shot off Rehan in the following over, with the fielder running to his left from deep midwicket unable to cut the ball off. FOUR! Make that two boundaries in three balls for the Indian pace spearhead as he goes inside out to a googly, lofting the ball over extra cover. This already is India’s highest score in the ongoing series, going past 420 in the first innings at Hyderabad. Jurel decides to give Rehan the charge in the following over, this time smashing the ball down the ground and clearing long off with a flat hit to collect his second maximum of the day — both scored off the same bowler. BOWLED! Dhruv Jurel misses out on a half-century on Test debut as he ends up cutting the ball straight to the keeper while attempting a late cut. Wood, meanwhile sticks with his lines to Ashwin and Jurel from the other end, bowling over and round the wicket respectively. AND JUREL’S DROPPED AGAIN! Second time this is happening in a space of four overs. Lady luck is being really kind to the debutant today. Jurel tried to glance a a full delivery from Wood towards the fine leg region, but Stokes had placed himself inside the circle in that direction and the ball came straight to him like a rocket! The England captain gets hit on the palm, but doesn’t react quickly enough to complete the catch.

DROPPED! Ollie Pope puts down a sitter at midwicket to hand Dhruv Jurel a lifeline on 32 after the debutant pulls a short-of-length delivery from Tom Hartley in front of square! How costly will that prove for the visiting team this innings? FOUR! Ashwin collects an easy boundary off Wood in the following over, glancing at a short-of-length delivery angled down leg. Was perhaps aware of the fact that Stokes has no short leg/short fine in place, and went for the shot as a result. Similar shot by Ashwin in the final delivery of the over, played a little squarer of the wicket albeit for a single.

England started off on an ideal note with Anderson and Root dismissing Kuldeep and Jadeja respectively in successive overs, but the attritional partnership between Ashwin and Jurel has once again shifted the momentum in favour of the home team, who are within touching distance of the 400-mark and still have three wickets in hand.

Wood, meanwhile, has a proper field in place for a barrage of short deliveries, with Stokes getting a third man and a fine leg in place besides a deep backward square leg and a deep midwicket. Multiple fielders at the midwicket area as well should Ashwin offer someone a catch at that zone the way Rohit did yesterday. FOUR! Jurel nearly falls victim to the plan as he glances at a short-of-length ball that sends the ball flying just wide of Stokes at leg gully. Tidy over from Hartley after the drinks interval, conceding just one with Ashwin setting off for a single with a drive in front of square. FOUR! Ashwin collects his third boundary after driving Rehan through the cover region! Ash, however, is found guilty of running into the danger zone of the pitch, and umpire Joel Wilson, who had given Ravindra Jadeja multiple warnings on the opening day, decides he’s had enough at this point and awards five penalty runs to the Englishmen as a result. First time this is happening since the second Test in India’s tour of Bangladesh in December 2022. Last time this happened on Indian soil was in the Indore Test against New Zealand in 2016. Ashwin, meanwhile, collects a single off the final delivery to keep the strike.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test Day 2 Live Score and Updates: All eyes will be on Ravindra Jadeja who is on unbeaten 110 as India look to earn a solid first innings totals. After Mark Wood and Tom Hartley struck early for England who lost the toss, it was Rohit Sharma and Jadeja who rescued the home team with a mammoth 204-run stand. Rohit was eventually dismissed on 131 as he became the oldest Indian to score a Test hundred. The departure of the Indian captain gave Sarfaraz Khan his deserved time in the spotlight as he made an impressive 62 off just 66 deliveries on debut. Despite playing his first India game, Sarfaraz showed no nerves and was confident in his sweep shots and hits down the ground. He got out as a result of mix up with his batting partner Jadeja, who completed his century on the next balls after Sarfaraz’s dismissal.

Nonetheless Jadeja soon completed his hundred and steered India to 326/5 on Day 1 and in a much comfortable position than how the day began. Now the all-rounder will have eyes on more runs to take the hosts to a solid first innings total.
