New Delhi: From flying airplanes and fighter jets to driving trains, women are leading the way. Many would not know that Asia’s first woman loco pilot is also from India(BHARAT). At present, India(BHARAT)n Railways has 1 lakh women employees, making up about 8.2 percent of the total workforce. Along with this, women are efficiently working as loco pilots, station masters, trackmen, signal maintenance guards, and gangmen.
The first woman loco pilot in India(BHARAT)n Railways was Surekha Yadav in 1988. Today, she drives semi-high-speed trains, including the Vande Bharat.

- The total number of women loco pilots in the country has now reached around 1,828.
- Uttar Pradesh has the highest number, with 222 women loco pilots.
- Their participation in the railways is steadily increasing.
- At several railway stations and on certain trains, the entire staff is made up of women.
- In neighboring Pakistan, there is a rail network stretching over 7,700 km, connecting all the major cities of the country.
- There is not a single woman who works as a loco pilot in Pakistan.
- Recently, the country got its first-ever metro pilot.
- Nida Saleh Malik operates the Orange Metro in Lahore, and she is being recognized as Pakistan’s first woman train (metro) driver in 37 years.
