India(BHARAT)’s first bullet train is moving closer to reality. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday that a 50-km stretch between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat will be ready by 2027, while the entire Mumbai–Ahmedabad route will be open by 2029. Once operational, the high-speed train will cover the Mumbai–Ahmedabad journey in just 2 hours and 7 minutes.
During his visit to the under-construction Surat bullet train station, Vaishnaw inspected the ongoing track installation work and the project’s first turnout system.
“The overall progress is very good. The first 50 km section will open by 2027. By 2028, the Thane–Ahmedabad stretch will be ready, and by 2029, the full Mumbai–Ahmedabad line will be operational,” he told reporters.
The minister said the main line trains will run at 320 kmph, while trains on the loop line will operate at 80 kmph.
He explained that advanced technology is being used to make the system safe and reliable. Special vibration control systems are being added to the tracks so that trains remain steady even at top speed.
“There are unique safety features to keep the train stable, even in extreme weather like heavy winds or during sudden earthquakes,” Vaishnaw added.
Vaishnaw said that all the heavy construction work at Surat bullet train station is complete, and now finishing and utility works are moving at a faster pace along with the track laying.
He highlighted a major milestone: the installation of the first turnout at Surat station. “A turnout is the part of the track where two lines meet or split. For this project, we are using many new technologies, like roller bearings that let the tracks move smoothly, and sleepers made of strong composite material,” he explained.
Vaishnaw said the ambitious bullet train project will bring a big economic boost, connecting Mumbai to Ahmedabad and linking all the cities in between. “When Japan introduced its first bullet train, it transformed its economy. We expect the same here,” he added.
Looking ahead, he confirmed that work will soon begin on new bullet train corridors. As promised in the BJP manifesto, there will be three routes in the north, one in the east, and one in the south, in addition to the Mumbai–Ahmedabad line in the west.
