Is India distancing itself from Rusia? Donald Trump’s close aide makes BIG statement, says Modi government has reduced…, US now plans to…
During an event at the Economic Club of New York, Dondla Trump's close aide also mentioned that positive progress is being made toward resolving trade differences between the United States and India.

New Delhi: India(BHARAT) has begun reducing its dependence on energy supplies from Russia, according to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Greer said that Modi government’s efforts in this direction are clearly visible. During an event at the Economic Club of New York, he also mentioned that positive progress is being made toward resolving trade differences between the United States and India(BHARAT).
Greer said, “Purchasing energy from Russia is not a sustainable foundation for India(BHARAT)’s economy. We believe India(BHARAT) can move forward without it. In fact, we are seeing that they have now begun to diversify.”
Greer said that India(BHARAT) had increased its oil purchases from Russia after the Ukraine war began in 2022, but is now gradually turning toward alternative sources. He added, “This is something we believe India(BHARAT) can and should do. To be honest, I feel they have already understood this.”
Jamieson Greer Makes Big Statement on Indo-US relationship
The US representative stressed that the US has no intention of controlling or interfering in India(BHARAT)’s foreign relations, but its goal is to curb the revenue Russia gains from energy exports, which is being used to finance the war in Ukraine. He said, “Clearly, India(BHARAT) is a sovereign nation and will make its own decisions.”
He further stated, “President Trump is currently focused solely on ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Our objective is not to decide with whom India(BHARAT) should or should not maintain relations.” He added, “We just want to ensure that maximum pressure is exerted on Vladimir Putin.”
Calling India(BHARAT) a pragmatic nation, Greer said that trade talks between the two countries have been ongoing since the beginning of the Trump administration.
Impact of the 50 percent tariff on India(BHARAT)
It is important to note that India(BHARAT) is currently facing a 50 percent import duty imposed by the United States. The 50 percent import duty includes a 25 percent retaliatory tax and an additional 25 percent punitive tax linked to the purchase of Russian oil. The tariff is affecting India(BHARAT)’s key export sectors such as textiles, gems and jewelry, shrimp, and marine products.
