Karan Johar on Ranbir Kapoor's Animal: 'It's my best film of the year, the reason why I love Sandeep Vanga is because…'

Ranbir Kapoor and Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal is a massive money-spinner that has given catharsis to the audience and polarizing responses among critics. The discussions around the film began from December 1 and a month (or a year) later, this action-drama is still being discussed.

Karan Johar, who was a part of the recent round table by Gallata Plus, spoke about the thundering success of the film that has exceeded commercial expectations and emerged as a monstrous hit. He said how it was his best film of the year and gave out the details why he admired the craft of the director.

He said, “It has taken a lot of courage for me to say this because I fear judgment, like it also happened during the time of Kabir Singh, which I also love, I am like I’m gonna say this, I don’t care anymore. I’m just gonna say that I loved Animal, it was an absolutely conviction based narrative, breaking storytelling, breaking, grammar, breaking, everything that you conform to mainstream cinema, like there’s a scene when two men are fighting and suddenly there’s a song, I’m like where have you seen all of this. And I had tears in my eyes.”

Johar added, “I felt something is wrong with Sandeep or something is wrong with me, but something put together is right about this film. I was like this is not an average thinking mind. This is the mind of someone who’s so distinct and so individualistic that I was so blown away; I saw the film twice, first as an audience and then to study it. I think the success of Animal, the acceptance of the film itself is game- changing. It’s going to bring in the kind of syntax that we have not seen.”

The filmmaker then spoke about what he loves about Sandeep Reddy Vanga. “What I love about him is that he has a popular song and he’ll place it and it stop it whenever he wants. This is the kind of conviction I also want to have and which I had while making Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.”
