Karan Johar reveals Ranbir Kapoor 'manages his own dates, has no PR or manager'
Filmmaker-producer Karan Johar, who directed Ranbir Kapoor last in the 2016 film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, heaped praises on the actor for handling schedules on his own, without a manager or PR team. The events unfolded after the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director was asked in a conversation with Mid-Day to shed light on differences between actors Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.
Speaking about the only common traits between Ranbir and Ranveer, KJo said that it’s their ‘incredible talent’. He further reiterated that beyond this, they couldn’t be more different in their demeanor and work ethic.
On working without PR or a manager
Karan Johar, while talking about Ranbir Kapoor termed the Animal actor possessing ‘patience and self-reliance,’ which is uncommon in the industry. Calling Ranbir ‘the most patient human being’, KJo revealed that such is his patience that one can keep him waiting for 14 hours on set and he won’t say a thing.
Not just this, Karan Johar also shared how Ranbir focuses on one film at a time and handles his own dates. On managing his dates, the producer explained that Ranbir knows all about it. When one asks him for schedule, he opens his phone, which contains all of his own dates, brands, schedules, days off, and holidays.
On playing a ‘word game’
Karan Johar, while sharing an anecdote from the shooting days of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, said how ‘word-game’ is a fascinating aspect of Ranbir’s process. In that, Ranbir would ask for a single word to encapsulate the essence of a scene, and that word would guide his performance.
On enjoying his own company
Karan Johar also shed light on Ranbir Kapoor’s ability to enjoy his own company, even while dining alone in restaurants. Sharing one such incident, the director, who is busy promoting his action-thriller Kill, said that finding Ranbir sitting alone at the restaurant he would ask, ‘Why are you eating alone?’ To which, the Brahmastra star would say ‘I want to eat my meal and go back to sleep.’
On the differences between Ranbir and Ranveer
Karan Johar added that it is the ‘stoic self-sufficiency’ encapsulating Ranbir’s personality that sets him apart from Ranveer Singh. On the other hand, he called the Padmaavat actor ‘an energetic force of nature’. He further added that unlike Ranbir’s studious approach, Ranveer, on his part, thrives on the energy of the world around him.
While the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani filmmaker called Ranveer Singh a director’s actor, he revealed that Ranbir moves with detachment.
In his remarks, the 51-year-old described both actors as ‘unquestionably genius artists’ who leave a lasting impression on their viewers. At the same time, he added that Ranbir Kapoor’s methodical and introspective style is balanced by Ranveer Singh’s dynamic and immersive approach.
