Malayalam director PT Kunju Muhammed lands in legal trouble, complaint filed over…

A serious complaint has been filed against veteran Malayalam director‑producer and former MLA PT Kunju Muhammed, accusing him of molestation during a screening for the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). The alleged incident has sparked a police investigation and raised concerns about conduct within the film‑festival circuit.

What is the entire matter?

According to the complaint, the woman, who was part of the IFFK selection committee, alleges that last month, after a day of festival‑related work, Kunju Muhammed invited her to a hotel room where committee members were staying. She claims that once there, he behaved indecently, making unwelcome physical advances that amounted to sexual harassment.

Following her complaint, which was reportedly submitted to the state Chief Minister before being forwarded to police, the authorities registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the law governing sexual harassment and molestation. The investigation has begun, and officials have started collecting evidence, including CCTV footage from the hotel.

Who is PT Kunju Muhammed?

PT Kunju Muhammed is a well-known figure in Malayalam cinema. Over the decades, he has directed several films, including Magrib, Garshom, Paradesi, Veeraputhran and Viswasapoorvam Mansoor, earning critical acclaim along the way. He also served as a Left-backed independent MLA in Kerala during the 1990s. In recent times, he was acting as the chairperson of the IFFK selection committee.

The action against PT Kunju Muhammed

The complaint triggered swift legal action. The hotel’s CCTV footage is being reviewed, statements have been recorded, and the investigation is ongoing under state police. He has been formally booked under charges related to sexual misconduct. While the filmmaker denies any wrongdoing, calling the allegations a misunderstanding, the police insist on carrying out a full inquiry before drawing conclusions. The case has drawn attention not only within the film fraternity but also among those advocating for safety and respect for women working in the entertainment industry.
