What’s happening in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir?

As per media reports, the Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir agitation which began earlier this month in Muzaffarabad, turned chaotic after an unidentified gunman opened fire on students, injuring one person. The reports say that the incident in Muzaffarabad triggered massive outrage, with students resorting to vandalism, and anti-government slogans in massive numbers, which was reminiscent of the recently seen Gen Z-led protests in Nepal and Bangladesh.

Fresh protests in Muzaffarabad’s top universities

Readers can note that what was initially confined to one of Muzaffarabad’s top universities, became a movement which spread rapidly as the administration banned political activities on campus. As a part of the protests in the Muzaffarabad’s top universities, students complained of high semester fees and poor facilities, which were similar to an agitation in January 2024.

Notably, the fresh protests were backed by the influential Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), coming just a month after violent clashes in POK left over 12 civilians dead amid growing anger over taxes, inflation, and military excesses.
