New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government is reportedly preparing to begin work on a 240-km-long bullet train corridor connecting Amritsar and Jammu. This project will be another major gift for Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), following the recent launch of Vande Bharat train services in the Kashmir Valley. According to a CNN-NEWS18 report, the National High-Speed Rail Authority has invited bids for a ‘Final survey for alignment and aerial survey’ for the proposed Amritsar-Jammu High speed rail corridor (HSR).

Both Amritsar and Jammu are key commercial centres in Punjab and J&K respectively.

“With an objective to meet growing passenger demand and optimise high speed rail connectivity between major cities/commercial and economic activity centres, an HSR corridor is being studied between Amritsar-Jammu covering desired obligatory points and major public hubs among other considerations. For this purpose, NHSRCL is undertaking preparation of Detailed Project Report of these corridors,” the document says.

The ongoing study for the Amritsar–Jammu corridor involves preliminary route planning and a final location survey. The final alignment design will be developed using advanced Aerial LiDAR technology.

To recall, the Modi government in July had told Parliament that it had plans expand the HSR network in India(BHARAT) beyond MAHSR (Mumbai-Ahmedabad) corridor to meet the growing passenger demand between major cities of commercial, economic and tourist importance.
