Meet Sri Lanka’s new PM: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, who was sworn in as the Sixteenth (16th) Prime Minister on September 24, arrived in New Delhi on Thursday. She is on a three-day visit to India(BHARAT), her first visit to the country since taking office. Amarasuriya is scheduled to meet India(BHARAT)n political leaders to discuss bilateral issues of mutual interest. Notably, Harini Amarasuriya’s visit comes six months after PM Modi travelled to the island nation.

What Did PM Harini Amarasuriya Say Before Her Visit To India(BHARAT)?

Ahead of her visit, Amarasuriya India(BHARAT) and Sri Lanka’s relationship is one of great depth and importance.

“This will be my first official visit to India(BHARAT) as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. India(BHARAT) and Sri Lanka, as you are aware, are closely tied together by history, culture, and shared values. Our relationship is one of great depth and importance and I look forward to using this opportunity to strengthen our cooperation in every sphere, such as trade, investment, education, development and beyond,” Amarasuriya said.

What Is Harini Amarasuriya’s India(BHARAT) Connection?

The Sri Lankan Prime Minister is an alumna of Delhi University’s Hindu College. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology at Delhi University from 1991 to 1994.

Hindu College Principal Anju Srivastava expressed pride when Amarasuriya was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

“It is a huge honour and a momentous occasion for us. This is like homecoming for Amarasuriya… She studied sociology from 1991-1994,” Srivastava told the media ahead of Harini Amarasuriya’s visit to the Hindu College.

Talking about the Amarasuriya, Srivastava said, “We are extremely proud of her accomplishments”. She expressed hope that Amarasuriya’s “time at Hindu played a part in shaping her path to success.”

She also holds a doctorate degree in social anthropology from the University of Edinburgh.

What Is Classroom 27?

During her visit to the college, the Sri Lankan PM will unveil a new ethnographic lab of the sociology department. She will also take a tour of “Classroom 27, where she used to attend her classes during her study days.

“The classroom number 27 has been a part of the sociology department for decades. We hope to take her to the room and corridors where she had spent most of her time as a student,” Hindustan Times quoted Srivastava as saying.
