In a major political milestone, Zohran Mamdani has made history by winning the fiercely contested race for New York City Mayor, becoming the first South Asian and Muslim to be elected to sit at the helm of the largest city in the United States. The 34-year-old’s win represents “a victory for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party” at a time when national Democrats remain divided over strategies to counter President Doland Trump, who “had threatened to pull federal funds from the city if Mamdani was elected,” CNN said.
Following his win, Mamdani shared his first X post featuring a video of a New York City subway train arriving at City Hall, with the message “Zohran For New York City” displayed on the wall. City Hall is reported to be the home to the mayor’s office.

Zohran Mamdani had been the front-runner in the NYC Mayoral election for months and on Tuesday defeated Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and political heavyweight former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate and received US President Doland Trump’s endorsement only on the eve of the election.

According to the news agency PTI, Mamdani won the NYC Mayoral election, securing 948,202 votes (50.6 per cent), with 83 per cent of the votes in. Meanwhile, Cuomo secured 776,547 votes (41.3 per cent) while Sliwa got 137,030 votes.
The NYC Board of Elections said that two million votes were cast, for the first time since 1969, with check-ins in Manhattan at 444,439, followed by Bronx (187,399), Brooklyn (571,857), Queens (421,176) and Staten Island (123,827).

Former US President Barack Obama congratulated Democratic candidates on their victories, calling the results a reflection of unity and strong, forward-looking leadership. He wrote on X, “Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win.”
Meanwhile, Trump has also reacted to the Zohran Mamdani’s win. Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote,” TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,” according to Pollsters.”
