New Delhi: Muslims have opened their coffers for the Babri Masjid being built in Beldanga, Murshidabad district of West Bengal. TMC suspended MLA Humayun Kabir had appealed for donations on December 6, after the foundation stone of the mosque was laid. Following this, there was such a rush to donate that everyone was surprised. The 11 donation boxes kept in Beldanga were filled with notes in no time. Money also started pouring in through QR codes circulated on social media. Humayun Kabir said that by Monday evening, December 8, online donations through UPI had crossed Rs 2.47 crore. The cash amount in the 6 boxes also reached Rs 57 lakh. Counting of money continued with machines on Tuesday, 09 December 2025, as well.
What is the estimated budget for building the Babri Masjid?
People are donating for the Babri Masjid being built in Murshidabad, not only from West Bengal but also from other states of the country. According to the information, Humayun Kabir has estimated a budget of Rs 38 crore for building the Babri Masjid. The donation drive started after the foundation stone of the mosque was laid on December 6. People in Beldanga arrived with bricks along with cash. 11 donation boxes were kept there for donations. After the foundation stone laying ceremony, there was a scramble to put cash into the large steel boxes. People were throwing bundles of notes towards the boxes. Finally, Humayun Kabir himself had to appeal to people to stop donating, as the limit for depositing cash in the bank had been exceeded.
Cash was counted at his residence in Berhampore
On Sunday night, Kabir entrusted 30 teachers from local madrasas with the task of counting the cash at his residence in Berhampore. The counting was done under CCTV surveillance, and the entire process was live-streamed on social media to maintain transparency. Kabir said that this public support has surpassed all expectations. He also claimed that donations had come from outside India(BHARAT), too. Kabir said that people have voluntarily donated to the mosque. He dismissed the rumours of finding foreign currency in the donation boxes.
Received death threats: Kabir
Amidst the commotion surrounding the mosque, the Beldanga MLA revealed that he had received death threats on Sunday night. Although he had not filed a police complaint by Monday evening, his trust deployed armed private security personnel for his round-the-clock protection from Tuesday onwards. Currently, three police officers from the state government are also providing him security. Kabir said that he will demand the deployment of central forces in the Calcutta High Court. According to sources, Humayun Kabir is scheduled to travel to Delhi in the next two days, where he will meet several political leaders, including AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi.
