Pakistan- Afghanistan conflict: In a significant geopolitical development for South Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan have once again found themselves at the centre of a tense military standoff. In a point of concern for the region, both the countries have recently engaged in standoff largely due to Pakistan’s renewed crackdown on the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the region. For a background, the TTP continues to assert its presence in Pakistan despite Islamabad’s repeated claims of weakening the impact of group, particularly in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province.

In the state of Peshawar, TTP fighters have reportedly set up checkpoints on roads, underscoring the Pakistani military’s limited control in the region, causing a sense of panic for Pakistan.

TTP controlling Peshawar: major challenge for Pakistani Army

In the recent development, videos circulating online appear to show militants of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) openly patrolling the outskirts of Peshawar, with no visible presence of the Pakistani army or police in the region, emerging as a major challenge for Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir.

Doha Agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan in danger?

The latest developments have also raised questions about the Doha Agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Commentator Ahmed Sharifzad noted on X that the TTP’s blockade of Peshawar’s main road suggests the Taliban has broken its promises to Islamabad. He accused the Afghan Taliban of supporting the TTP, allowing the group to operate freely in KPK.

As per media reports, Islamabad believes the TTP is being sheltered by the Afghan Taliban, an allegation that Kabul denies. However, this has deepened mistrust between the two neighbours creating a situation of conflict. The TTP has been responsible for multiple attacks on Pakistan’s military and security forces, particularly in Kashmir and Balochistan. Therefore, it can be noted that violence in KPK has sharply increased since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, contradicting Pakistan’s earlier assumption that militancy would decline following the US withdrawal.
