Nepal GenZ Revolt: 4 Foreigners, 79 Nepali prisoners who escaped jails, caught at this border

New Delhi: Nepal is stepping towards normalcy after days of violent protests by GenZ against the KP Oli-led government. During the unrest, several prisoners succeeded in escaping from jails. Now, when they were trying to cross the international border, they were caught by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). The SSB has so far nabbed 79 inmates, including four foreigners, while they were attempting to cross into India(BHARAT). These prisoners were trying to barge into India(BHARAT) through various checkpoints along the India(BHARAT)-Nepal border.

How Many Prisoners Were Attested By SSB?

Out of 79 prisoners – two are Nigerians, one is Brazilian, and one is Bangladeshi.

According to officials privy to the development, these foreign nationals were arrested in Bihar.

Additionally, the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) arrested a woman inmate on September 11. She has been identified as Anjila Khatoon. She was arrested by the CRPF from the West Bengal area. Anjila is the first female inmate arrested by the force so far.

Are More Prisoners On The Run?

According to officials, the numbers may rise as strict vigilance is continued at all border entry points.

These arrests were made as part of SSB’s heightened vigilance after reports emerged of mass prison breaks in Nepal.

The Nepal Unrest

The violent protests that erupted in Nepal led to incidents of arson, vandalism, and attacks on correctional facilities. Taking advantage of the unrest, thousands of prisoners fled the jails. Citing a threat, India(BHARAT)’s border guarding force, SSB, stepped up surveillance, conducting stringent identity checks and monitoring vulnerable stretches of the open border.

“The precautionary measures are meant to ensure that no escaped inmate can misuse the open border system between the two countries,” an official deployed on the border said.

The SSB functions directly under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The force is responsible for safeguarding the approximately 1,751 km-long Indo-Nepal border. This border touches several India(BHARAT)n states, like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim.
