Over 3.2 Million Popular Children's Toys Recalled Over Safety Issue

The Calico Critters brand is under fire after a recall of 3.2 million toys.

Calico Critters, a purveyor of miniature animal figures with homes, furniture, and accessories, is facing a government recall after the deaths of two children using the toys.

The Calico brand is owned and operated by Pine Brook, N.J.-based Epoch Everlasting Play. The toys, which are known for their furry critters, are manufactured in New Jersey.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall, which takes 3.2 million Calico Critters toys off the market. The impacted toys involve more than 50 toys but centered on a select brand line that included a baby bottle and pacifier accessories linked to the deaths of two children.

The CPSC specifically identified bottle accessories that “were sold in yellow, pink, blue, and orange colors" while "one style of the bottle has two yellow handles."

As first reported by CNN, one death involved a 2018 death of a two-year-old child in New Mexico while the other took the life of a nine-month-old Japanese child back in 2015. The small parts of the toy, according to the CPSC, pose a choking hazard.

The figurine sets are sold at popular retail outlets like Walmart  (WMT) - Get Free Report and Amazon  (AMZN) - Get Free Report with prices costing up to $80 for a complete set of toys and accessories.

Calico Critters confirmed the recall by posting a note on the recall from the CPSC on its website.

"Epoch Everlasting Play LLC is aware of three incidents involving the pacifier accessory, including two deaths," the note reads. "One fatal incident involved a 2-year-old child in 2018 in New Mexico, and the other fatal incident involved a 9-month-old child in 2015 in Japan (with a pacifier accessory distributed by Epoch Japan)."

The CPSC also issued a consumer advisory on what steps parents can take moving forward -- step number one is removing the recalled toy from places where the child can reach it.

"Take the recalled bottle and pacifier accessories away from children immediately and contact Epoch Everlasting Play LLC for instructions on how to submit a photo of the recalled bottle and/or pacifier accessory along with contact information and confirmation of destruction to receive a free replacement accessory," the agency said.

The pacifier accessories were sold in yellow, orange, pink, dark pink, blue, and teal colors, the agency reported.
