Opposition leaders hold meeting to decide strategy as Parliament impasse continues

In the midst of Parliament's gridlock over their demands over the Manipur violence, floor leaders of opposition parties met on Tuesday morning to discuss their approach.

The meeting took place in the Rajya Sabha chamber of the Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge.

The Congress and other opposition parties have demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi provide a comment on the situation in Manipur. They have used demonstrations and sloganeering in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, forcing the two Houses to adjourn since the start of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 20.

The opposition parties have also petitioned the Rajya Sabha Chairman to lift Sanjay Singh's suspension from the Aam Aadmi Party. The AAP member was suspended on Monday for "repeatedly violating" the Chair's instructions.

Prior to the meeting, Kharge stated that opposition parties would make a decision on their approach as a group.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.09 per cent to 101.25.

Market benchmarks open on flat note; Sensex at 66,400

The Sensex and Nifty began flat in early trade on Tuesday, as investors remained cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve rate decision and a busy week of corporate earnings.
