Parliament Winter Session: Don’t link Vande Mataram debate to West Bengal elections, says Amit Shah

Parliament Winter Session: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the Vande Mataram debate in the Lower House, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday led the Vande Mataram discussion in the Rajya Sabha. He said that the composition of the national song beautifully embodies the spirit of patriotism and further strengthens this connection to help future generations understand its importance. Defending the ongoing debate, he said in the Upper House that discussions around Vande Mataram, “will always be necessary” and should not be viewed through the lens of electoral politics.

He responded to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks in the Lok Sabha where she raised questions on the need for such debate, indicating that the BJP was raising such issue ahead of the West Bengal elections.

Shah, attacking the opposition, socially Congress, stated that some people were attempting to “diminish the importance of Vande Mataram by linking it to the Bengal polls, never limited to Bengal”, despite the fact that the song’s roots were from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Anandamath.
“The need for discussion on Vande Mataram—the need for dedication towards it—was important during the freedom struggle, it is important today, and it will remain significant for the bright future we envision for 2047,” Shah said.

Terming the song as “immortal creation that evokes duty and dedication towards Mother India(BHARAT),” he said that soldiers and police personnel chant the song even before supreme sacrifice.

The Union Home Minister stated that discussing Vande Mataram in Rajya and Lok Sabha would help the coming generations to understand the national song’s true importance. “true importance and glory.”

The Winter Session started on December 1 and will continue till December 19.
