'Particularly in Florida': New groups warn of U.S. travel

Throughout President Doland Trump's second term in the White House, numerous nations have periodically issued new travel advisories to citizens who may be coming to the U.S.

In March 2025, Germany's Federal Foreign Office updated its page on travel for the U.S. with a paragraph stating that "even a slight overstay of the visa upon entry or exit can lead to arrest, detention, and deportation upon entry or exit."

Denmark, Finland, and The Netherlands released additional guidance for LGBTQ+ travelers after the Trump administration stopped recognizing passports with a gender marker that differs from one's sex at birth.

Canada has provided new guidance around changes to registration for longer visits, while Spain, Slovenia, and The Netherlands also issued new guidance around potential problems that can arise around crossing the border and clearing customs.

While government advice tends to focus on the country as a whole, given diplomatic relations between nations, individual activist and human rights groups sometimes draw attention to the situation in specific states.

Florida is no longer safe for international tourists, coalition says

On Feb. 4, a coalition of local human rights groups that includes the ACLU of Florida, the Florida Immigrant Coalition, and the Family Action Network Movement released a travel alert over the state's conservative leadership and federal immigration enforcement.

"When federal and local agents can detain anyone at anytime without cause and without identifying themselves, everyone is at risk," said Tessa Petit, who heads the Florida Immigrant Coalition, in a statement cosigned by all the members.

"International visitors must ask themselves if a soccer match is worth the risk of being kidnapped and jailed until God-knows-when, in deplorable conditions, by a secret police who is using racial profiling, judging people for how they look or their accent, and getting away with literal murder in the streets of our country."

The political message by groups advocating for human and immigrant rights in the state was issued after a number of foreigners coming into Florida for tourism were detained by immigration authorities over the last few months.

The alert represents a political statement against the actions of the Trump administration.

The coalition also says it is issuing the statement in advance of the FIFA World Cup that will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. in the summer of 2026.

The expanded Trump travel ban is expected to further impact attendance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"Be aware of the risks before setting foot in Florida": Tessa Petit

In December 2025, the Trump administration expanded its travel ban to 39 countries and suspended visa processing for a total of 75.

These actions prompted multiple travel-industry professionals to highlight the anticipated impact on fans, who may either have trouble securing a visa or choose not to come to the U.S. for fear of being targeted.

Despite the fact that they are talking about their home state, the group of human rights associations said it "urge[s] the international community to be aware of the risks before setting foot in Florida."

Petit summed up the situation with a blunt statement: "Florida is no longer a safe destination for international tourists."
