‘Politics over peace…’: White House reacts after Trump denied Nobel Peace Prize, says Nobel Committee proved…

Nobel Peace Prize 2025: In its first reaction after US President Doland Trump was denied the Nobel Peace Prize 2025, the White House lambasted the Nobel Committee, alleging it had placed “politics over peace”, but Trump will “continue ending wars and saving lives”.

What did White House say?

“Once again, the Nobel Committee has proved they place politics over peace. President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will,” White House spokesperson Steven Cheung wrote on X.

On Friday, the Nobel Committee announced Venezuelan pro-democracy activist and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, ending Doland Trump’s aspirations for the prestigious award. The US President had vehemently campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize since assuming office for his second presidential term.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he has ended seven wars so far in his second term, and asserted that not awarding him the peace prize would amount to an ‘insult’ to America.

Why Nobel picked Venezuelan leader for peace prize?

According to the Nobel Committee, Maria Corina Machado was chosen for the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee called Machado a “brave and committed champion of peace,” and asserted the peace prize has been bestowed on a “woman who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.”

“Democracy is a precondition for lasting peace. However, we live in a world where democracy is in retreat, where more and more authoritarian regimes are challenging norms and resorting to violence,” it said, noting that Machado has spent years working for the freedom of the Venezuelan people.

“The Venezuelan regime’s rigid hold on power and its repression of the population are not unique in the world. We see the same trends globally: rule of law abused by those in control, free media silenced, critics imprisoned, and societies pushed towards authoritarian rule and militarisation. In 2024, more elections were held than ever before, but fewer and fewer are free and fair,” the Nobel Committee said.
