Popular burger chain suddenly closes locations nationwide

The fast-food burger sector is in turmoil this year as several major chains have revealed plans to close 100s of underperforming locations nationwide.

Wendy's shocked the burger chain industry during its third-quarter earnings call when it revealed that it would close about 300 restaurants by the end of 2025.

Dozens of Hardee's and Carl's Jr restaurants shuttered

CKE Restaurants, which operates Carl's Jr and Hardees's restaurants, have been closing dozens of locations of both brands. Carl's Jr most recently closed its location at Churn Creek Road and Dana Drive in Redding on Nov. 18 after operating for 36 years, the Record Searchlight reported.

Carl's Jr also closed a location in Loveland, Colo., in October 2025 at Eisenhower Boulevard at Cleveland Avenue, after previously closing a restaurant on Mulberry that had been open for 40 years, Retro 102.5 reported.

CKE's Hardee's has been closing locations, as well. The chain closed two restaurants in Fargo and West Fargo, N.D., in November 2025, InForum reported.

Hardee's also closed six locations in Minnesota this year, including two in Mankato, and one each in Willmar, Fairmont, Sleepy Eye, and Marshall, Minn., Bring Me The News reported.

The restaurant chain also revealed that it closed a Hardee's location in Sioux City, Iowa, in mid-November, after closing another location in South Sioux City in November 2024, KCAU-TV 9 reported.

Five Guys closes franchise locations

Popular burger chain Five Guys has closed several franchise locations over the last six months, likely for many of the same reasons other fast-food and casual restaurant chains have shut down their establishments, including fierce competition, rising costs, and reduced customer traffic.

Five Guys at 2323 Lancaster Drive in Salem, Ore., permanently closed in May 2025, with all employees being relocated to another location at 2990 Commercial St. in Salem. The restaurant had opened in 2010, according to the Salem Statesman Journal.

Social media reported that a Five Guys in Huntington Beach, Calif., closed in August 2025, which was confirmed by the dining chain's locations page on its website.

Another West Coast Five Guys closed in mid-October, as franchisee Montana Burgers Inc., which owns nine of the chain's restaurants in Montana, Idaho, and Washington, closed its Yakima, Wash., location on Oct. 14, 2025, after eight years of operating, the Yakima Valley Business Times reported on Facebook.

Across the country, the Five Guys franchise on Boston Post Road in Orange, Conn., posted a note on its front door revealing that it closed its location, NBC Connecticut reported on Nov. 21, 2025.

Five Guys closes Sacramento-area location

And now, most recently, a Five Guys franchise in Folsom, Calif., near Sacramento, said it will close on Nov. 25, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice filed with the California Employment Development Department, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The notice, filed on Nov. 7, informed 16 employees that they would be laid off Nov. 25, but the franchisee would be responsible for backpay and benefits for employees for up to 60 days.

The franchisee did not reveal a reason for closing the restaurant and did not indicate whether laid-off employees would be offered positions at other nearby Five Guys locations.

The Folsom Five Guys location had been open for eight years after its debut in October 2017.
