Popular mall apparel chain closes delivery, warehouse operations

Popular department stores and smaller mall retailers are closing locations and facilities as part of restructuring plans to eliminate underperforming stores and unnecessary costs, seeking to improve company performance.

Two major retailers also closed logistics and fulfillments centers in their restructurings.

Consumers are among the unfortunate victims of closings, as they see their favorite stores go dark.

Several department store chains closed locations in 2025 and in the first month of 2026.

Macy's closing 14 stores in 2026

Macy's said it would close 14 store locations in 11 states this year as part of its “Bold New Chapter” restructuring plan, which it launched in 2024, Axios reported.

Marshall’s closed two stores this year, located in Los Angeles and San Jose, Calif., before Jan. 5.

Other department stores that closed stores last year included JCPenney and Nordstrom.

When a retailer shuts down several department stores, it's no surprise if regional fulfillment or distribution centers also close down or consolidate.

With a reduction of the need for inventory, these warehouse facilities are often no longer necessary.

After closing 50 stores in 2024, 66 stores in 2025, and earmarking 14 more stores for closing in 2026, Macy's informed employees that it would close two fulfillment center locations in Cheshire, Conn., and a distribution center in South Windsor, Conn.

Macy's said it would shut down all operations at the three locations between March 14 and Aug. 29, 2026, and permanently lay off 1,050 workers.

American Eagle Outfitters closes logistics business

And now, popular apparel retail chain American Eagle Outfitters announced it is shutting down its Quiet Logistics business for third-party customers and three of its fulfillment centers, as the company was unable to attract enough business to continue operating, Supply Chain Dive reported.

"This strategic decision will enable [American Eagle] to prioritize growth and focus on its portfolio of leading lifestyle brands," the company wrote in an email.

Difficulty growing third-party logistics

The Pittsburgh-based retailer, which acquired Quiet Logistics in 2021, was unable to grow its third-party logistics business and instead operated Quiet as an American Eagle regionalized fulfillment center network.

Any excess capacity for its logistics and fulfillment operations served its third-party customers.

American Eagle will discontinue third-party logistics services over the next several months and will close operations at its Boston and Dallas fulfillment centers in the first half of 2026, the company said.

Number of layoffs unknown

The company has not revealed how many of its employees will be laid off.

"Quiet has valued its partnerships with its customers and will assist with their transition to new providers," American Eagle wrote in an email to Supply Chain Dive. "We appreciate the contributions of our associates, and we are committed to doing what we can to support them as well."

The company had previously announced that its La Palma, Calif., fulfillment center would close this year, but its Atlanta fulfillment center will continue to provide distribution services for American Eagle brands.

American Eagle bought Quiet Logistics in 2021 and combined it with delivery start-up AirTerra, which it also purchased that year.

The company's CEO Jay Schottenstein called the Quiet acquisition "anti-Amazon" at the time of the purchase.

"It’s going to give the ability for us and other retailers to be able to compete against the Amazons, the Targets and the Walmarts in the future," Schottenstein said.
