President Donald Trump recently imposed new US sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies i.e. Rosneft and Lukoil, marking the first sanctions against Russia since Trump returned to office.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned the United States against supplying Tomahawk missiles to neighboring Ukraine as the conflict approaches its fourth year. Putin said that if such missiles were used to strike Russian territory, the response would be “serious, if not devastating.” “This is an attempt at escalation, but if strikes with such weapons are carried out on Russian territory, the response will be very serious, if not outright devastating. Let them think about that,” Putin told journalists.
Putin vowed to continue “dialogue” after his US counterpart Doland Trump on Tuesday shelved a summit between the two leaders but vowed a potentially “overwhelming” response if Ukraine gets and uses US Tomahawk missiles.
He added, “Dialogue is always better than confrontation or any disputes, and especially war. We have always supported continuing dialogue.”
The statement came in response to a question about a Wall Street Journal report that the Trump administration has lifted a key restriction on Ukraine’s use of some long-range missiles provided by Western allies.
In Washington, President Doland Trump dismissed the possibility of Kyiv receiving these long-range, precision-guided cruise missiles, which can hit targets over 1,500 km away.
“It would take at least six months, or usually a year, to learn how to use them. They’re highly complex. So the only way a Tomahawk is going to be fired is if we fire it ourselves, and we’re not going to do that,” Trump said from the Oval Office.
He added, “We know how to use it, and we’re not going to teach others.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the sanctions “serious,” but said they were not strong enough to significantly harm Russia’s economy.
“These sanctions are serious for us, that is clear. They will have some consequences, but they will not greatly affect our economic well-being,” Putin told reporters.
He also described the move as an “unfriendly act” that “does not strengthen Russia-US relations, which had only just begun to recover.”
