Russia-Ukraine war: US President Doland Trump has claimed that Vladimir Putin let him down in by failing to aid the process to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war, even as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer asserted that the Russian President showed his “true face” by launching the biggest attack on Ukraine since the conflict broke out in February 2022.
What did Trump say about Putin?
Addressing joint news conference with Starmer, Trump claimed that Russia was “losing more people” than Ukraine, and Putin “let me down” by not stopping the Russia-Ukraine war. “He has let me down. I mean, he’s killing many people and he’s losing more people than he’s, you know, than he’s killing. I mean, frankly, Russian soldiers are being killed at a higher rate than the Ukrainian soldiers,” he said.
The US President, who has often sought to project himself as a ‘peacemaker’, confessed that he had thought the Russia-Ukraine war would be the “easiest” one to solve, but it wasn’t the case, and reiterated his claim that the war would’ve never happened if he was the president at the time.
“This was a thing that would have never happened had I been president. If I were president, it would have never happened. And it didn’t happen for four years. Most people agree it didn’t happen, nor was it close to happening,” he claimed, adding that he would ultimately find a way to end the Russia-Ukraine war and usher peace in the region.
Notably, Trump failed to negotiate a Russia-Ukraine peace deal despite a much-hyped summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, during which he had urged the Russian leader to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Why Starmer claims Putin ‘isn’t interested in peace’?
Meanwhile, addressing the presser, Keir Starmer attacked Putin for ongoing attacks on Ukraine, claiming that this show that the Russian President was not interested in peace. The UK Prime Minister revealed he talked to Trump about how to “increase the pressure on Putin to get him to agree a peace deal that will last.”
“In recent days, Putin has shown his true face mounting the biggest attack since the invasion began, with yet more bloodshed, yet more innocents killed, and unprecedented violations of NATO airspace. These are not the actions of someone who wants peace. So we’ve discussed today how we can build our defences to further support Ukraine, and decisively increase the pressure on Putin to get him to agree to a peace deal that will last,” Starmer said.
