Putin on Ukraine war: ‘Working on Ukraine plan, taking together some partners, including US’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday delivered a clear message of peace ahead of his bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Referring to the Russia-Ukraine war, Modi said India(BHARAT) is “not neutral” but “in favor of peace.” “India(BHARAT) stands for peace. We always support peace,” Modi said before the meeting began.

Putin praised PM Modi

Putin also praised Prime Minister Modi’s role and said he was grateful that India(BHARAT) was taking peace efforts in the Ukraine conflict so seriously. Putin described India(BHARAT)-Russia relations as strong in military, space, artificial intelligence, and many other areas, saying they plan to move forward in all of these areas.

During the bilateral talks, PM Modi told Putin that they have been in constant contact since the Ukraine crisis began. “Like a true friend, you have kept us informed of everything from time to time. I believe that trust is a powerful force. I have discussed this issue with you many times and have also presented it to the world. The welfare of nations lies in the path of peace. Together, we must lead the world in that direction. I am confident that the efforts being made in recent days will lead the world back to peace.”

India(BHARAT)-Russia relations are a prime example of this: Modi

Modi also said that the strength of India(BHARAT)-Russia relations has a historical basis. He said, “I believe the role we played in 2001 is a great example of how visionary leadership thinks—where to start and how far to take the relationship. India(BHARAT)-Russia relations are a prime example of this.”

It’s worth noting that this 23rd India(BHARAT)-Russia annual summit is taking place at a time when the United States is pushing for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine war and appealing for global cooperation. This meeting is also seen as a test of how New Delhi balances its relations between Moscow and Washington, despite the nearly four-year-long war in Ukraine.

Putin said, “First of all, thank you very much for inviting me…I could share a great deal of details about the events taking place in Ukraine. We are taking together with some partners, including the US, on a possible peaceful statement. Thank you for the attention in finding solutions for this situation. Our ways are deeply rooted in history, but it is not the words that matter; it is the substance of the matter, which is very profound. We really appreciate that and the fact that you, as PM, take special personal attention to that.”
