Ray of hope for former PM Imran Khan as United Nations intervenes in his case, warns Pakistan government

New Delhi: A United Nations (UN) special rapporteur has appealed to the Pakistani government to take immediate action, warning that the treatment of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in prison may be inhumane and degrading. UN Special Rapporteur Alice Jill Edwards said the Pakistani government must ensure that Imran Khan’s detention complies with international human rights standards.

Imran Khan’s Cell Is Reportedly Under Constant Camera Surveillance

In September of this year, Imran Khan’s legal team contacted the UN special rapporteur regarding the alleged mistreatment of him and his wife in prison. The UN representative stated that Imran Khan was transferred to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on September 26, 2023, after which he was allegedly placed in prolonged solitary confinement. According to the representative, Imran Khan is kept in his cell for approximately 23 hours a day, with limited contact with the outside world. Furthermore, his cell is reportedly under constant camera surveillance.

Demand To End Solitary Confinement

A UN official stated that prolonged or indefinite solitary confinement is prohibited under international human rights law. They demanded that the Pakistani government immediately end Imran Khan’s solitary confinement. The Pakistani government has not yet issued an official response in this matter. However, the Pakistani government has repeatedly claimed that Imran Khan is being provided with better facilities in prison compared to other inmates.

Imran Khan Met His Sister

After nearly a month, Imran Khan met with his sister, Uzma Khanum. Following the meeting, Uzma told reporters that her brother’s health was fine, but he was very angry and said he was being subjected to mental torture. According to Uzma Khanum, the meeting lasted approximately 20 minutes. Imran Khan reportedly said that he is kept locked in his room all day and is only allowed out for short periods.
