Japan facing major crisis, records biggest population decline in a year; Will Nippon be empty soon?

New Delhi: While the US may be looking to include Japan in the G7 group, this country, which once ruled the world with its technology, is now struggling domestically. Japan’s declining population has become a major headache. According to official figures, Japan’s population decreased by nearly 900,000 in the last year. This means the difference between births and deaths is approximately 900,000. Historically, this is the largest decline in Japan’s population.

Japan Lost 900,000 People In A Year

For Japan, with a population of approximately 125 million, losing 900,000 people in a year is a major blow. This represents about 0.7 per cent of Japan’s population, which it lost in just one year. While this figure may seem very small for India(BHARAT), with a population of over a billion, it is a very significant and worrying matter for Japan.

Japan has been facing a continuous population decline for several years. The declining birth rate and ageing population are slowing down Japan’s economic, political, and social development. The proportion of young people in Japan’s population is continuously decreasing, while the proportion of the elderly is continuously increasing.

Impact On The Economy

The continuous decline in the young population is creating increasing problems for Japan’s development. The shortage of working-age youth has slowed down economic growth, while on the other hand, the government is constantly having to increase spending on pensions and healthcare for the elderly, creating double pressure on the economic front.

Government Efforts Insufficient

The Japanese government is continuously trying to overcome this population crisis, but its efforts have so far proven insufficient. In recent years, the government has tried to provide financial assistance for childbirth, improve work-life balance, and increase women’s participation, but these efforts have not yet had any impact on the population.

The country continues to set records for population decline. According to population experts, if Japan doesn’t find a way to increase and stabilize its population soon, it will face a major crisis in the coming decades. At that point, the declining population will no longer be just a statistical problem for Japan, but a defining issue that will shape the country’s future.
