RG Kar rape-murder convict’s minor niece found dead inside wardrobe of her room, foul play suspected
At the time of the incident, the girl was being looked after by her aunt, who had gone out to buy firecrackers on Sunday evening.

The 11-year-old niece of Sanjay Roy, a convict in the RG Kar rape and murder case, died a day after she was found unconscious in a cupboard at a house in Kolkata’s Alipore area. According to authorities, the girl was discovered hanging inside a cupboard in Vidyasagar Colony under the Alipore police station on Sunday evening. She was rushed to SSKM Hospital for treatment, but sadly, she passed away the next day.
The incident has shocked the local community. Police are investigating whether the girl took her own life or if someone tried to harm her. A senior Kolkata Police officer said, “All aspects are being investigated. The real cause of death will be known after the autopsy report is received. A case of unnatural death has been registered at Alipore police station.”
It is understood that no one else was at home when the incident occurred. The girl’s mother, who was Sanjay Roy’s sister, had committed suicide several years ago. After that, her father married his sister-in-law.
At the time of the incident, the girl was being looked after by her aunt, who had gone out to buy firecrackers on Sunday evening.
Residents of the area told the police that there were often domestic problems in the house. On the day of the incident, the girl’s aunt went out to buy firecrackers. When she returned, she did not get any response from the child despite repeatedly calling out. Concerned, she broke the door and entered the house.
At first, she could not find the girl, but when she opened a cupboard, she saw the minor hanging and unconscious inside.
The police were immediately informed. The girl was rushed to the hospital, but doctors declared her dead on Monday. The police then sent the body for an autopsy.
After initial investigation, the police suspect it may be a suicide, but they are not ruling out foul play. So far, no one from the family has officially filed a complaint.
Locals said the girl was under mental stress as she was often scolded by her aunt and father.
Her paternal grandmother said, “They lived separately and did not let me enter the house. I couldn’t know what was happening inside. Can a child who just turned 11 hang herself? Her mother had committed suicide a few years ago, and then my son married his sister-in-law.”
This incident comes after a gruesome case at RG Kar Medical College. On August 9 last year, a post-graduate trainee’s body was found in a seminar hall. The sole convict, Sanjay Roy, was sentenced to life imprisonment and is currently lodged in Presidency Correctional Home.
