Russia-Ukraine war reaches space! German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius makes big announcement, says, ‘Russian satellites tracking…’

The war between Russia and Ukraine has lasted for years, with US President Doland Trump acting as a mediator. While talks to end the conflict are still ongoing, no final deal has been reached. Meanwhile, the greatest threat to Europe comes as Russia’s fighter jets and drones have repeatedly entered the airspace of NATO countries.

What did Germany reveal about Russian satellites?

The conflict has now expanded to space. Germany has made serious accusations that its satellites are being disrupted. Earlier on Thursday, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius cautioned about the growing threat posed by Russian activities in space, citing concerns over two Russian satellites shadowing Intelsat satellites used by German troops and other agencies, reported Reuters.

While speaking at a space conference in Berlin, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said, “Russia and China have expanded their capabilities for warfare in space rapidly over the past years: They can disrupt satellite operations, blind satellites, manipulate or kinetically destroy them,” as reported by Reuters.

Intelsat is a U.S.-Luxembourg company that operates more than 50 satellites. The two Russian spacecraft were launched in 2014 and 2023, and they have long been accused of getting close to other satellites for purposes of tracking and gathering information.

Last year, French startup Aldoria accused Russia of suspicious space activity, claiming it spotted a Russian satellite suddenly approaching another satellite. Similarly, American company Slingshot Aerospace stated in 2023 that Russian satellites were displaying hostile behavior near non-Russian satellites. Pistorius emphasized the importance of discussions around offensive capabilities for deterrence in space. He cited the example of Russia using two of its Luch Olymp satellites to monitor Intelsat satellites.
