Texas Tech Coach Suspended After Shocking Comments

Texas Tech basketball coach Mark Adams' comments featured slavery and Bible quotes.

Mark Adams, coach of the men's basketball team at Texas Tech, has been suspended for making what the schools says was an "inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment."

The comments were made while Adams was attempting to get one of his players to be more receptive to his coaching.

To do so, he "referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents and slaves serving their masters."

While the school did not identify the offending verse, a quick google search points to Ephesians 6:5 which say "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and which sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ."

Another verse, Colossians 3:22 states "Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord."

Adams apologized to the team after he found out the player was upset about his use of the Bible verse, ESPN reported

Adams signed a contract extension last spring that runs through the 2026-2027 season and pays him about $15.5 million over five years.

If he were to be fired without cause, he would be owed 60% of what is remaining on his contract, compensation that ESPN pegs at more than $7 million.

Texas Tech finished their regular season on Saturday and begins postseason play in the Big 12 tournament on Wednesday.
