Thalapathy Vijay to finally meet families of Karur stampede victims in Chennai after five weeks? Here’s what we know
Actor-turned-politician Vijay will meet the families of those who lost their lives in the Karur rally stampede on October 27, marking his first interaction with them since the tragic incident.
After nearly five weeks of silence following the tragic stampede at his political rally, actor-turned-politician Vijay is all set to meet the families of those who lost their lives. The incident, which took place on September 27 in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district, claimed at least 41 lives and left around 100 injured.
Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, had earlier expressed grief through a social media post and promised both financial aid and personal meetings with the bereaved families. That long-promised meeting is now finally happening.
According to a report by CNN-News18, the meeting will take place in Chennai on October 27. Vijay is expected to spend five to six hours interacting with the 41 affected families, listening to their experiences and concerns.
Why is the meeting taking place in Chennai instead of Karur?
The decision to hold the meeting in Chennai instead of Karur has drawn curiosity. Sources within TVK explained that Vijay wanted the meeting to be “meaningful” and well-organised, ensuring adequate time with each family.
However, finding a suitable venue in Karur turned out to be an enormous challenge. A TVK insider shared, “Arranging a proper venue in Karur was almost like climbing a mountain. The space suggested by the local police was not ideal for ensuring the safety of both Vijay and the families. Crowd control and accommodation for everyone would have been difficult.”
The source added that, except for one family, all others have agreed to travel to Chennai to meet Vijay. “The actor wanted a calm and secure environment where conversations could happen without chaos,” the insider said.
How did the tragic stampede happen?
On September 27, thousands of supporters gathered for Vijay’s rally in Karur, far exceeding the permitted crowd limit of 10,000. As per reports, Vijay arrived nearly six hours late, triggering restlessness among the crowd. The moment he appeared, the eager supporters surged toward the stage, breaking barricades and causing a deadly stampede.
The tragedy led to public outrage and intense trolling of the actor and his party. Many questioned the planning and crowd management at the event, blaming the organisers for negligence.
Following the tragedy, TVK temporarily suspended all its public programmes. The upcoming meeting is expected to mark a turning point for the party, both emotionally and strategically.
Party sources suggest that the discussions held with the victims’ families may also shape TVK’s next course of action, especially as the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections draw closer. Observers believe that this meeting could not only help rebuild trust with the public but also redefine Vijay’s image as a responsible leader who stands by his people during crises.
