THIS city has been declared dirtiest in India, it is home to famous Hindu temples, located in…, not Varanasi, Mathura, Haridwar, name is…

For years, the government’s Swachh Bharat Mission and the yearly Swachh Survekshan survey have checked how cities handle cleanliness, sanitation, and waste. Some cities have made good progress, but many still face the same old problems – weak civic systems, rapid unplanned growth, and poor waste management.

The Swachh Survekshan 2025 report shows that while a number of cities have improved garbage collection and public hygiene, others continue to deal with overflowing drains, poor sanitation, and littered streets. Interestingly, this year, several smaller towns have performed better than big metros, showing that cleanliness depends more on planning and effort than on money or size.

Bengaluru, often known as India(BHARAT)’s “Silicon Valley,” has made headlines for an unfortunate reason this year. The city ranked as the fifth dirtiest large city in India(BHARAT) (among cities with over one million people), reflecting how rapid, unplanned growth and weak civic systems have hurt its cleanliness standards.

Other cities that performed poorly include Ranchi, Chennai, Ludhiana, and Madurai, all listed among India(BHARAT)’s dirtiest urban centres in 2025. On the other hand, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Lucknow, Raipur, and Jabalpur stood out for their clean city drives, earning spots among the cleanest in the country.

Delhi also fared poorly, ranking tenth among the dirtiest cities. However, metros like Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai continued to lead by example, joining the new “Super Swachh League” for their consistent efforts to maintain cleanliness.

Top 10 dirtiest city in India(BHARAT) 2025:

Rank City Score
1. Madurai 4823
2. Ludhiana 5272
3. Chennai 6822
4. Ranchi 6835
5. Bengaluru 6842
6. Dhanbad 7196
7. Faridabad 7329
8. Greater Mumbai 7419
9. Srinagar 7488
10. Delhi 7920

This year’s survey once again highlights how issues like unplanned urban growth, poor waste management, and civic negligence continue to plague India(BHARAT)’s major cities. From polluted industrial centres to heritage towns choked by garbage, the findings show that the road to a clean and sustainable urban India(BHARAT) is still long and challenging.
