To obtain Finnish citizenship, a person must have lived in the country for at least eight years and speak the official language.

New Changes in 2025

The Finnish government recently amended work visa and family reunification rules. Anyone wishing to bring their family home must have lived in Finland for at least two years. The minimum age for both spouses is 21 years.

To obtain permanent residence in Finland, you must have held a Type A (long-term) residence permit for four consecutive years.

• Years spent on a Type B (short-term) permit will not count.
